Watched Kao ni Doro wo Nuru randomly. I wasn't moved but I'm also going through a period of apathy so I'm not exactly blaming the drama for that. Despite being tagged as romance, the romantic story between ML and FL is secondary to FL's growth arc which tackles emotional abuse from SML
Despite not being very long, it still somewhat dragged for me. ML especially was mostly just there as a manic pixie dream boy to change FL's mediocre life and we don't get a whole lot on him outside of this (which IG is pretty RR in and of itself but also rather frustrating). FL was fairly standard for a jdrama FL, quiet and meek and mildly irritating. That being said, this was part of her growth arc so I give it a pass (I also didn't really mind her soft-spoken nature as much as I thought I would, but I wouldn't say she's RR to any capacity). At the end she grows more confident but is still very traditional compared to ML.
The main RR aspect of this drama would obviously be ML being a femboy king (not really romantic RR but character RR?). Unlike other dramas of similar style (like say, Kuragehime), he doesn't only crossdress but rather varies depending on his mood or look (he'll wear just about anything in any style and I'm not sure if I wanna be him or wanna be with him but I liked it xD).
Needless to say, this drama reminded me a lot of Kuragehime but I enjoyed it less. They're quite similar with this one being less comedic and therefore more grounded but I felt like Kuragehime was more heartfelt and less dense xD The development in Kuragehime is also more 50/50 between the leads + also some for ML and the supporting characters which was just mostly lacking in this one (yes, this one is also way shorter but still).
After watching both, I noticed that crossdressing men are usually very confident, especially compared to crossdressing women which are (from my experience) most often very shy and meek with few exceptions.
Got me thinking (terrifying, I know), Goukon ni Ittara Onna ga Inakatta Hanashi actually has very confident crossdressing/masc/tomboy FLs and I should appreciate their greatness more. Dominion and Devotion and Oh My General also come to mind, the latter more than the former but then again, OMG just slays in every regard. As for shy/meek crossdressing MLs... HAHA, can't think of any. Meek MLs are already so incredibly hard to come by, same with femboys and both together? Hah, I think I'm asking too much
I just wonder how this works in the author's mind when women wearing men's clothing is generally less frowned upon than the reverse... But I guess in the end the crossdressing is not often tackled in any meaningful way (at least not by any country other than Japan, lmfao) and is merely a means to a haha-funni premise. The only explanation I can think of is that maybe it's because the women typically crossdress due to necessity while the men crossdress for pleasure so their perspectives and therefore confidence levels would be different. There's some validity to that, I guess, but I'd be lying if I said it didn't get old, lmao. It also doesn't really change if ML is crossdressing due to necessity, only sometimes
Or maybe, just maybe, I'm overthinking all of this and it ain't that deep 💀
Thanks for coming to my very lengthy and rambly ted-talk UwU
