Does anyone have a favorite director or writer?

i also just recently started trying to pay more attention to directors/writers/etc, it's really fun! and definitely helps me find more stuff to watch that i'm more likely to enjoy

so far i'm a fan of Nuchy Anucha Boonyawatana who did The Blue Hour and Not Me. she's also working on Burnout Syndrome which i'm excited for :)

for non-bl stuff i loveee Park Chan Wook movies. i really need to watch more from him

 Ju Moon:
No way!!!!!!  This news broke my heart! 😭 😭😭😭Ai Long Nhai is one of my absolute favorite series. I love everything about it!

By coincidence, I've been doing my first-time watch of "Ai Long Nhai" and also lovin' it. While I'm sad about the end of Meen & Ping as a great CP, I strongly defend the right of actors to determine their own careers and lives - and in any case, new Thai CPs emerge to take the place in my heart of those that reach their inevitable end.

 rowan:

guys can yall recommend any thai bls? i literally just scrolled for an hour trying to find a good thai bl to watch (im now in the mood to watch the hour long episodes) and they all have pretty much the same plot or the actors arent the best </3

I'm reluctant to make specific recommendations without understanding what  you're looking for, but here's a general suggestion: Among the 56 Thai titles on your PTW list are some really great BLs that I personally loved - so perhaps you can just sort by "Score" (average MDL rating) and see if there are any at or near the top (rating of 8 or higher) that appeal to you.

Help! I picked up My Stubborn again, and I can’t stop laughing. This show is so unhinged 🤣🤣🤣

Like they just dropped us in mid-plot and IDK how these characters even know each other. I’m so confused lol

Like is Thai, Jun’s, actual brother/cousin/neighbor??? Do I need to rewatch the trailer? Why is everyone kissing everyone? Who are these people?

Anyway. I’m amused, so I’m tunning in next week.

 Indie Art Girl:

I've decided to pay closer attention to the directors, producers and writers of the dramas I'm watching, and hopefully understand a little more about their work and how dramas are made.  I even created a private pfp list to collect the names from my very favorite dramas.

The first thing I learned is the director of one of my top BLs, HIStory 3: Trapped, also did one of my top fav straight C-dramas (Hidden Love, for the curious) and a CW C-drama (also straight) that I'm enjoying. I was surprised and impressed. Plus the director is a woman. 💪

A plus: It might help me ID some of the better dramas based on who's behind the work and to try other dramas by the same people.

Does anyone have a favorite director or writer?

I’m going to be controversial here, since a lot of people online absolutely hate his work lmao

But I love New Siwaj’s dramas.

I do think he often drops the ball when his shows touch deeper or touchy subjects, but for the most part, I know what to expect from him. If I want cute couples that are feel-good, along with a splash of trauma (or a lot iykyk) I know where to go.

  • We Are
  • Perfect 10 Liners
  • Until We Meet Again
  • Between Us
  • Star in My Mind / Sky in My Heart
  • A Boss and a Babe
  • Fourever You
  • My Only 12%

I liked that you asked this question because it made me realize that some of the screenwriters for my favorite Taiwanese BLs are also screenwriters for some of my favorite non-BLs!

This is my answer as well. (How could my answer be anyone other than the director of "UWMA"?)

I saw this, and despite it being a JBL, I was instantly intrigued. I look forward to this one.

Added to my WTA list!

 rowan:
i noticed aof noppharnach produced, wrote, and directed a couple of my favorite dramas!

Wow, he has an impressive list, not even counting the dramas I didn't like. 😆 Thanks, I've added him to my list!

 rowan:
i really should start paying attention to the writing more, though, because some lines in dramas are BAD. i might start paying closer attention to the directors and writers now that you brought it up!! :D

Right? At times the writing can be so good too! So checking out more work by those writers could possibly lead to more good watches. For me Perfect 10 Liners stands out in part cuz of the writing.

 RXinw:
I avoid behind the scenes, interviews, promotional events, actors' private lives, etc.

It may not seem like it, but I don't do much of this myself. However, when I have watched BTS, after the drama is finished, I've really enjoyed it. It would take a special actor or drama for me to check out their interviews and other stuff. I'm so not into the promo angle.

Having the list of directors and writers, etc, makes it easy to click on their name and look at the drama list of their work and see what else might sound good. Also to watch for any new dramas in the works.

Me too! That's cool she did Not Me! Another of my top fav BLs. And wow, does she have an insane pf of work. Added to my list, thanks!!

Yes, he's got some of my fav BLs on his list as well as some duds. I think he's one of the only directors I'm sorta familiar with.  Another good one for my list, lol.

This is also a concern I have. I think too much was done in this first episode. After watching I felt like the plot was left too exposed for a first episode as well as the introduction of so many characters created confusion as to what exactly their roles are. However I look forward to seeing where that take it from here because the first episode delivered on the promises in the trailer in one go, so I am left wondering what more does the series have to offer. I also have this hope that with such a start and with there being only 10 episodes, that it will be fast paced, but not so fast that it runs leaving the plot behind.

This is my official review of the first episode lol the effect of the NC scenes have subsided.

We Are
Perfect 10 Liners
Until We Meet Again
Between Us
Star in My Mind / Sky in My Heart
A Boss and a Babe
Fourever You
My Only 12%

This is very interesting. My ratings for these series are very inconsistent:

Until We Meet Again - 10/10 (absolute masterpiece; an entire special 10 scene)

We Are - 9/10

Perfect 10 Liners - 8/10

Between Us - 5/10

Star in My Mind - 10/10

Sky in My Heart - 10/10

A Boss and Babe - 7.5/10

Fourever You - 7.5/10

My Only 12% - 3/10

It seems that New Siwaj's works are either a hit or miss for me.

Hellooooooo BL friends around the world.

I've been wondering how some of our BL friends are doing that haven't posted in a while!

No pressure, just asking about you and hoping all is well! 😊

(From Red, White & Royal Blue, my fav American BL movie)

(re "My Stubborn") Exactly. When I said that I'll re-watch the first episode before next Sunday, this was actually what I meant, not the (insufficiently kinky *yawn*) NC scenes.

I often re-watch the first episode or two of a series to sort out the characters in my mind and to fully understand the story context.

Aww, I loved this one. You, my friend, have no appreciation for true fluffy cuteness.

If memory serves me right, I have never re-watched an entire episode of any BL series.

Absolutely none lol I swear if had heard "Cake" one more time I would have thrown my laptop

Hard to know whether this is a clever literary device (so-called in medias res), where they then go back and fill things in, or (more likely) just sloppy writing - but if I have any brilliant insights (unlikely) after my re-watch, I'll let you know.

Same, imagine having a spreadsheet I would be so stressed out about that because I don’t know how to use any of them.

My spreadsheet is quite simple. I have added columns for each of the columns in the lists in one sheet for each list (CW, Completed, PTW, On-hold, Dropped). Today I also added 3 sheets for 4 of my custom lists, namely Rewatched, Role Reversal and Favorite Actors/Actresses. These will help in case my account gets banned again lol. Though I really hope that never happens, having a separate list is a good idea for me. I can also keep track of what I rewatch (if ever) and what I want to rewatch, in the Rewatched sheet. It's neat and has links for all the titles because I just copy-paste the lists from my MDL watchlist to the tables. ^^

For example, this is my Rewatched sheet, with all the relevant columns.
