there are ways to still watch the uncut versionMitzi Miao:
OK, I overcame my scruples and re-watched the two episodes of "Cooking Crush" so far in the uncut version (on Bilibili) - and there are indeed a few scenes that are lacking in the Youtube (cut) version. I'm rather surprised that GMMTV would do that. I guess WeTV must have paid well.
I have to admit that this is my first Off/Gun series - and I now I understand why they're so popular. I love them! They're such good actors, and they can also be so funny. And now I'm glad that I held off on watching "Theory of Love": In just 13 days it will be on Viki, which is so much more convenient to watch. Binge-watch is already in my calendar!

tbh I'm not the biggest OffGun fan, but I liked Theory of Love. imo their best series is Not Me.
Yesterday I finally watched the short Just Freinds? from 2009. I still can't believe Lee Je Hoon was in a gay film (even if it's just a short one). If I hadn't known it was him, I don't think I'd have recognized him (and I still haven't at first haha). But what really amazes me is how in this 2009 short film they have a better make out\kissing scene than probably all what I've seen in SK BLs so far. I do think SK BLs start to get better in this regard lately (less fish kisses). But if in 2009 they could've made such a film and in 2016 we had a film like One Summer Night that was a very explicit film, how come we got in BLs all those actors who seemed like they really didn't want to be there? that's what I don't understand, as it's clear that there were actors in SK who could have done a better job and not look so uncomfortable.
You haven't seen Not Me then?Elisheva:
plus also
imo their best series is Not Me.Mitzi Miao:
I know that "Not Me" has extraordinarily good reviews, but it's still sitting on my "Plan to Watch" list along with 105 other titles. I usually prefer feel-good fluff, so it'll have to wait till I'm in the right mood.

Yup, you're absolutely right. See my post two pages back about public opinion survey results across 12 different Asian countries; South Korea is near the bottom. What actually surprises me more is that Japan is #1 in this survey (most accepting) - and yet Japanese actors also seem so reluctant to play the game and even look like they're having fun with BL fanservice the way many Thai and even Taiwanese actors do.

Yes, let it find you when it's the right time. This is the best way :)
I don't say this about many, but this one is worth the stress.

I've seen this survey, it was very interesting. I showed it to a friend and she claimed it luck a neutral response, like for people who don't have an opinion on the matter or don't really care much.
I thought it was interesting how Taiwan, which actually has same-sex marriage, wasn't on the top of the list.
I find JP BLs to have really opposite 'extremes' - on one hand they have BLs like Cherry Magic and Kabe Sa Doujin that don't even have a kiss, and on the other hand they have series like Mood Indigo\Pornographer and films like The Shortest Distance Is Roundabout.

Apparently some of it is because of the time concerns of broadcast television, so GMMTV's version will be cut to fit the time slot.
But it's also a way to bring an online-only service on board to fund it. Online service gets the uncut to monetise however they do that and GMMTV gets the cut for broadcast and their platform. We'll see how this works out but it does have merits over a series being geo-locked on GMMTV's youtube so Viki can have it exclusively.

Firstly, you kind of hit on one point: those are films for cinematic and international release which have different rating standards from TV broadcast or streaming services. You will see the same differences in het dramas.
Second, LGBTQIA content is different from BL content. BL caters to (mostly) a female audience in Asia - still; whereas LGBTQIA content is often by the community for the community [though it ought to be for general audiences]. That's why you see so many idols in K-BL. Some use it to garner more fans, others use it as a starting point for moving into acting. To that end, they have to tread a fine line between keeping their current fans and acquiring new ones. South Korea being the convervative country it is has protest groups attend LGBTQIA rallies and has even shut down BL fan meets. It's why we are still getting K-BLs with no kissing. Case in point: the backlash Zuho received for "Star Struck".
BLs all those actors who seemed like they really didn't want to be there?Mitzi Miao:
They probably don't actually want to be there. It boils down to the lack of respect for the genre and it's audience.A lot of things geared to female audiences are undermined even with the buying power/support they always give. I think it is because BLs are not given the same standing as mainstream het media. The actors may not view it as worth taking seriously enough career-wise but see it as a stepping stone. The actors are likely afraid of just staying or being limited to the BL industry. There may be a stigma that comes with being a BL actor but they are actors so they should treat it like any other job regardless. As the genre grows hopefully the standards will move beyond just aesthetics and employ actors who take the craft seriously.
I appreciate J-BLs because you can tell that a lot of the actors take the role as any other acting gig and you see the actors doing other things outside BL seamlessly too.

Yes, I know LGBTQIA content is not like BL, I actually watched mostly gay films and content before I started to watch BLs. But those actors from gay movies could have done BLs, I see no reason why not to cast them, just becuase they are not idols? maybe I'm wrong, but not all SK BL actors are idols, right? I prefer a good actor over some idol. Didn't it happen also with the idol from Color Rush? I think it's a shame tbh. And tbh I hope to finally see SK BLs more in the level of Kdramas.

Yes, I agree with you. I think it's a shame. Mostly because I don't feel the same way in Thai or Taiwanese BLs. I mean, you might have those actors who seem very uncomfortable, but I think most of them don't and Thai BLs did evolve a lot in the last years. So in a way it feels like SK BLs just stay behind. I do think there is some progress, but not enough imo.
I appreciate J-BLs because you can tell that a lot of the actors take the role as any other acting gig and you see the actors doing other things outside BL seamlessly too.Saygo:
Yes, isn't it the same with Taiwanese actors? they are doing all kind of works and some happen to be BLs.
It's mostly disappointing becuase it's hard not to compare SK BLs to Kdramas, now I haven't watched many Kdramas, but all those I've seen were very good imo. Just to imagine what we can get if they'll decide to finally take BLs more seriously and make them like kdramas.

oh I see, thanks for explaining it to me =)
Do you mean GMMTV will start having more cut versions on YT?
Do you mean GMMTV will start having more cut versions on YT?Mitzi Miao:
I don't know. Possibly for bigger budget productions. They do seem to be experimenting with revenue streams as their international audience grows.
Anyone know if they've moved away from product placements for revenues entirely? I haven't seen that many of their 2023s yet but the most recent one I know had product placement was Moonlight Chicken early in the year. Enigma, Midnight Museum, and Only Friends didn't. Nor did I Feel You Linger in the Air, which really couldn't :) Though now I'm going to imagine Ming showing off the label on his juice during a hard day's work.

But I Feel You Linger in the Air wasn't GMMTV, no? I'm trying to remember if Cooking Crush has product placements and I don't know, maybe. I will pay more attention in the next eps. Also, does Last Twilight have any? and what about Dangerous Romance, they had any? seems like I don't remember much. The last ad placement I remember is the very funny perfume one in Playboyy.
