Please educate me about 'fanfic'. Isn't it under the BL umbrella?
"fanfic" is short for fanfiction.
Fanfiction are works of fiction based on already existing works. In these, fans explore the world or the characters further than the original author did -- they expand the stories, write what might happen after the original ending, or what happened in scenes we didn't see; often alternative events are imagined.
Fanfiction has always existed -- For the "Sherlock Holmes" novels, they used to call them pastiches. "Romeo and Juliet" is nothing but a fanfiction for "Pyramus and Thisbe", if you will.
The name Fanfiction has been around since the mid 20th century, as far as I know.
Fanfiction that explores a possible romance between two characters makes up a majority of the genre. In the Western (English-speaking) world, fanfiction with romance between two men is said to have been started in the 1970s or late 1960s with stories about Kirk and Spock. Since the pairings are often written with a "/" between the names ("Kirk/Spock", "Steve Rogers/Tony Stark"), the sub-gere is usually called "slash". By the way, it has its own tropes that often differ from the Japanese-originated yaoi / BL- genre; e.g. there is usually no "uke/seme"-dynamics.
If you look it up online, you'll find more than a few places where this information and more is readily available.

I am curious about the nature of plagiarism in fanfiction and would like to connect with a social science researcher who studies this topic.
In that case, you might want to check out the Organization for Transformative works as a starting point: https://www.transformativeworks.org/
They should have info about your first question, maybe about the second.
Other than that, there has been research on this topic, but I currently don't have any at hand. Surely it is possible for any educated adult to find what you are looking for.
I think you not liking BLs and you going into BL drama spaces saying you don't want it to be BL is a completely different thing. Nothing wrong with not liking a genre. Different thing to vocally advocate for less dramas in said genres in the space dedicated specifically for that genre.
It's one thing to say you wish there was no romance or straight romance in a drama/show that is NOT adapted from BL source material - that's fine, that's preference and I see it the same way when people say they don't want straight romance inserted in a drama that was not meant to be romance in the first place.
But commenting under BL title, that is based on BL source material that you wish it was not BL is simply ridiculous. Don't want to watch it? Don't watch it. Why even comment? If you are going specifically into space you dislike, just to say you dislike it - that's rude.
@Kate, please don't make assumptions without providing a plausible rationale for your statements. In the scientific community, we approach everything—even topics we may personally dislike or not consume—systematically and with proof. I actually appreciate the product in question, and as someone interested in its success, I seek to learn from the reactions to it on informal forums like this one. I was inquiring for further explanation about the issues raised in this discussion, not by me, not pressuring anyone to confirm my personal likes or dislikes. If you consider the context of my question, you'll see that I am genuinely interested in learning about "fanfic" from the perspectives of laypersons.
@Saeng, thank you for pointing to a link. Currently, in the subscribed database of scientific papers I have access to, I do not get specific answers to some of the interesting issues in the world of BL products. I've got some bibliography lists regarding the BL universe from researchers in Europe, and I have not gone through them yet, as they refer to studies done over a decade ago. Again, thank you.
Well, that's your opinion OP. I think some of y'all need to take a chill pill. Fanfic writers to be fined or jailed? What's next? Your logic is mind boggling. It's just fanfics.
The old saying applies here: don't like? don't read/watch.
Like seriously, it's that simple. No need to provide think pieces on this either. And definitely don't go on BL pages and write that you wish it wasn't BL. Like... what gives? There aren't that many BLs out there. When there are more BLs than straight dramas released each year, then you can come and say something about it. That will never happen btw. Hope this helps.

Have you heard about Xiao Zhan went to 1.5 years hiatus just because he reported a fanfic and so making that website being blocked and then a lot of users boycotting him which making him went on that said hiatus?
Did you know that Wang Yi Bo and Xiao Zhan can't be friends anymore (in public at least) and that Zhu Yi Long and Bai Yu should keep the distance from each other? Like ehm 3 meters or something. Why? Because of fanfics. The government made those rules to avoid ehm (english is not my first language) moral corruption? social corruption? It's enough to enjoy their works, no need to create fanfics, let's not harm people. I think for some time Bai Yu also have some problems, just not as extreme as Xiao Zhan.
And have you heard about GMM cancelled BL series which was cancelled because the writer initially creating the webnovel from a fanfic using Wang Yi Bo and Xiao Zhan's name and then after it was getting popular, she changed the characters' names and then sell it to GMM?
Fanfics is harmful and only created for traffic and or for money. Several of the writers making fanfics using their idols' names, making delusional people believed their idols are homosexual, even though they may not. And several others making popular idol on reverse harem with several popular idols or else whatever the writers wanted to write, all the absurd storyline they add, I never read fanfics I'm not sure what's what.
I will never supporting fanfics.
@ autumn iris
Yeah I heard some of those things. And I don't care. You don't fine or imprison anyone for writing a fanfic or for writing danmei novels. This isn't the 1500s.
If you cannot support fanfic then say so but don't advocate for people to go to jail smh. Bad look on you. And I thought you were a good person on the forums.
And if I say I wrote an YiZhan fic myself then in your eyes I deserve jail? Be so fucking for real right now. You are a bad person. Evil.
Straight romance was all anyone could see, whether it was on stage or on film, in music--even poetry. Same sex romance in any cultural art or entertainment form didn't exist, and when a try was made to open the door even the tiniest crack, the attempt was punished, and punished severely.
I think it's completely wonderful that all types of romance are finally exhibited and celebrated in the arts fields. It's long past time that all people can find themselves represented.
Having said all that, my preference is straight romance--but that's because it's what's most representative of me. Love is love. It's beautiful in all its forms.
BUT NO KINK, because that shit's just wrong.
Kidding.
Kink, too, if that's how you're bent and everyone participating consents.

I did not talk about fanfics at all so what exactly is your comment a reply to? For someone to claim to care for scientific approach you are fast to assume yourself, I was not replying to you, I did not tag you.
My comment was a reply to OP who made the forum post on the first place. Next time take a moment to read with understanding what you are reading and where. Not everything is about you and reply to you 👍
PurpleDazzle:
If you think BL is not your cup of tea, just move on.
yes that's what i do. i read the synopsis, the comments of the people and i look for the tags on the show's page before watching a drama. and then i express myself. if you don't like my opinion, you just move on.
PurpleDazzle:
Have you ever seen BL fans posting about straight shows stating they are disappointing because they are straight shows and that they don't excite them?
yes i have. many bl lovers just keep shipping men or saying their bromance ain't just bromance in some comments (not necessarily here on MDL). some said they were disappointed the original work was bl but not the adaptation... and it's justified. but i also can say that it's fine by me, that i'm happy it's not bl, since i like it straight. their disappointment means my own pleasure in the end... and that's life for you. can't do nothing about it.
Dianmu:
i"m not a huge fan of gl (but i respect them), do i ever say im dissapointed that the show is a gl? i do not. its called you knowing what you should say and what you shoudn't say.
if you don't that's YOUR problem, i really don't care if you want to express your opinion or not, it's your choice. the issue here is that you're telling me what should be said or not, but who are you? it's not for you to decide that.
this is your own opinion, you're subjective. you chose to believe that if i talk against bl i am uneducated, but it's not true. like bl lovers can say they wish a drama was bl or how they wish their ship would happen, i can say i wish a drama was not bl or how i am relieved a drama ain't bl.
@Kate i'm sorry but i have every right to comment on a title's page. it's not like i'm writing a review under each episodes. it's a general space where you can talk about the show before, while or after watching it. no matter if you watched it or not, if you like the synopsis or not, whatever. i'm free to say how i feel about the drama even if i don't plan on watching it. if i didn't like it for a reason unrelated to the bl aspect, i could say that too. if you find it disrespectful because my opinion goes against the drama, honestly, i don't really care. i was never violent or rude and i never used any offensive language. i'm simply stating my opinion as respectfully as possible.
-ShiNKi-:
i can say i wish a drama was not bl or how i am relieved a drama ain't bl.
then you are homophobic, stop beating around the bush!
No common sense and homophobic
"im not homophobic" then the answer is homophobic => " im not homophobic , but i'am"
i do get why people are calling you homophobic because you are, stop acting like you are a victim you arent, go on tell your homophobic opinion but don't cry and give the victim card when people call you exactly about the way you are
and bl is not going away ,you will keep seeing dudes kissing so good luck
reporting this page for homophobia before leaving 👋🏻

you can report all you want i don't care. i knew some people would react like you and that is the reason i made this post
i never said people could't watch or like bl, it's their choice. i also have the right to feel disappointed that the series ultimately wasn’t what I was looking for.
and YOU are playing the victim card screaming homophobia whenever bl is mentionned not in the way you like it. you just can't accept that i can dislike this kind of romance in a drama and that it is ok to tell it out loud
there's nothing like prejudice, hostility, discrimination, or negative attitudes toward people who are gay or toward homosexuality.
you're just being paranoid and always so defensive. you're actually the most closed-minded ones, unable to distinguish between someone who is hostile and someone who simply doesn't share your interests.
