Just a list of my favorite BL movies that include my thoughts about why they are my favorites.

Random Notes:

  • There are going to be some light spoilers in the comment sections.

Review Notes:

  • I do not have a review for every series on this list. I noted series with one at the end of the description with “See my full review for more details.”
  • You can click HERE to see my full review for the series that has one. Unfortunately, it will take you to the main list because MDL does not have a way to link the actual review.

Honorary Mention:

  • Goodbye Mother (Vietnam) - Would have rated this a 10 if MDL had a section for this country. This was an incredible movie. It had a beautiful storyline with an excellent script. The acting was wonderful.

  • Wish You: Your Melody From My Heart (Movie)

This is my unofficial first BL movie because I watched it on Netflix before I knew what a BL was. This was a beautiful and heartwarming story. The script was wonderful and not overly dramatic. The actors, music, and cinematography were incredible. As for the movie version, it had a lot of extra scenes which added so much to the story. See my full review for more details.

  • Life: Love on the Line (Director's Cut)

    2. Life: Love on the Line (Director's Cut)

    Japanese Movie - 2020

    10

Wow, this was an incredible movie. It had a beautiful storyline, excellent script, and great acting. As for the movie version, it featured a number of previously-unseen scenes that were deleted from the original drama series. It also has additional storyline about the two main characters’ later lives.  following their adventures as they enter their eighties. See my full review for more details.

  • Semantic Error: The Movie

    3. Semantic Error: The Movie

    Korean Movie - 2022

    10

Although I prefer the series version, this is one of the rare cases that you can’t go wrong with either version. This had a great storyline and script. The cast was great and did a great job with their characters. The cinematograph and graphics were awesome. As for the movie version, all of the changes that were made did not impact the quality of the story. I enjoyed the added bloopers and behind the scenes footage at the end of the movie. See my full review for more details.

  • Restart after Come back Home

    4. Restart after Come back Home

    Japanese Movie - 2020

    9.5

This was a beautiful movie which had a great script. It was both funny and touching at the same time. The cast was great. However, there was some shaky camera work.

  • His

    5. His

    Japanese Movie - 2020

    10

This has such an impactful story. It shines a light on the many misconceptions about gay men that society has and how everyone deals differently with confronting it. At the same time, it breaks some stereotypes some may have on certain communities. The acting was outstanding and the cinematography was beautiful. The script was excellent. However, one criticism is this is supposed to be a sequel to “His - I Didn't Think I Would Fall in Love” series but it has no real link to it. See my full review for more details.

  • Where Your Eyes Linger (Director’s Cut)
    9.0

This had an interesting storyline. The script was simple but good. However, I’m the first to admit it had some weak parts to it. The cast was incredible with their characters. I enjoyed the added behind the scenes footage at the end of this version of the movie. I strongly recommend watching this version because it incorporated the best qualities from the series and 2020 movie. See my full review for more details.

  • Your Name Engraved Herein

    7. Your Name Engraved Herein

    Taiwanese Movie - 2020

    9.5

This movie still lingers and haunts me in my head. It had a very beautiful storyline with a very bittersweet, and weird, ending. The actors were incredible. Although it’s an incredible movie, I can’t bring myself to rewatch it because of the ending.

  • Let's Eat Together, Aki and Haru

    8. Let's Eat Together, Aki and Haru

    Japanese Movie - 2023

    10

This also includes the sequel “Let’s Eat Together Aki and Haru: More Please” to make room for other movies. Both movies were very charming and sweet.  The sequel did a great job building on the previous movie. The cast was great and did a wonderful job with their characters.

  • Hello Stranger: The Movie

    9. Hello Stranger: The Movie

    Filipino Movie - 2021

    9.5

This is a continuation story to the “Hello Stranger” series. This had a very well written script, that addressed some important social issues. The only negative aspect is it had two story elements that I hate: break-up before dating started due to miscommunications and a love triangle. However, both were done very well. All of the actors were incredible. It had beautiful cinematography, but editing for the flashback scenes could have been better. The music was very good.

  • Long Time No See

    10. Long Time No See

    Korean Drama - 2017, 5 episodes

    10

The page linked to this is for the series version because MDL does not have one for the movie. This was a great good movie. There were some weak elements to the script, but I still enjoyed it. The cast was great and had some cool action scenes.
