Frankly speaking, I don't get why Kuzumi even bothered with Rio after catching him with that boy. I'm completely…
I think that's who sensei is ever since the beginning, he is a stubborn, selfish and self destructive person who doesn't really give two shits about the people around him. That's why even he was surprised when Kuzumi wanted to stay with him despite him being that kind of person. I think it's partly Kido's fault too why he turned up like that. Kijima is a very private person, but when he met Kido he gradually opened up to him and lowered his guard. Kido's betrayal was a huge blow for him that turned him into the cold and twisted person he is right now.
That's why he acts so shitty to everyone who wants to get close to him. But given Kuzumi is a kind hearted person, he sympathizes with sensei, he really wants to make the relationship work regardless of how he's gonna get hurt multiple times. He understands who sensei is as a person and he accepted the good and the bad side of him. Their relationship is def far from perfect, there's gonna be a lot of ups and downs but the difference from before and right now is that sensei is committed to make this relationship last.
And I think there were a few details that were explained in the manga but were left out in the movie. So I def reco to read the manga to fully understand where the character's behavior is coming from. Plus there was a really cute scene with Kijima's bday at the end of the manga.
