I think folks in China are still not ready to watch dramas where the ML is evil as hell and has done some horrifying shit and still be loved by FL. Had they gone by the novel, it would have been a chaos on weibo with angry folks losing their shit on the character.

I know back then kings used to have wives and concubines far younger than them but watching this drama turn it to some romantic crap was weird as hell.
--This drama could have done so well and shown a mentally broken person with DID healing from past scars but they turned it into a total romantic past lover reunion melodrama bullshit.
--Even Shin Hye Sun's acting and Truck kun won't be able to save this one. --KJY's character suffered from start till the end. --JHJ's character has no character development and is only there for gag. --LJW needs to go to acting school.
Xuan Lei should have been executed in way worse way but then again he died by the hands of the woman he loved so that too was okay.
I don't blame Luo Mei for crying over his death since even though he was the biggest asshole to everyone, he loved and cared for her a lot and she knew it. The guy she loved didn't give a shit about her and hurt her time and again while he was the one who always cared for her feelings so no wonder she did start to have feelings for XL.
LM is one tragic character be it in the novel or drama and I hope they don't turn her into the character she ended up in the novel but keep her on the positive side.
9 eps are left and even though the drama has been different from novel to quite some extent, there is still quite many things left to be covered.
