Here's my theory: All the events that happened were dreams of Xiang Heng. Even though none of the events were real, the group of friends still solved their problems without the supernatural element present in his dreams. The cycle of death never happened because Xiang Heng saved both of them, the wishing journal was never real because we see the real journal that was revealed to be a gift from Xiang Heng, and he never became a ghost because, well, he's still alive.
