I don't think its out of desire for a man, but feeling like she has a place and matters. She doesn't matter to her family, and she was starting to feel like Chun was replacing her in the group. She saw Chun as superior to her and was envious of the relationship Mudan was developing with her. All Sheng Yi really needed was reassurance that Mudan valued her and was proud of her. We the audience know that Mudan is, but Sheng Yi does not know that Mudan values her and is proud of her. Then she has her turd of an ex telling her all the things she wants hear while her family is already planning on giving her to another man whether she is willing or not.

I'm also swooning over how their friendship is building. Their complete trust, their late night talks. Their teasing and playfulness. ITS THE DREAM!

Agreed. I really think though, even in the beginning he mostly demanded a 90/10 split because if he made it too easy for her, she might not be willing to work with him. I don't think he cares all that much about the money( he cares some, yeah), but he also has a reputation of being money hungry and corrupt and she might question why he was willing to help her so readily if he made it too easy.

I think Shengyi is jealous. she sees a connection and a history between them that she doesn't have. They are both from well off families, smart, educated, refined. She is worried that Chun will replace her.

I LOVED how he even pointed out that by solving her problems for her, would show a lack of faith in her. Chef's kiss.

Based on what I’ve seen in some of the other adaptations I’ve read…. it’s the need to give him a redemption arc. it wouldn’t surprise me if they made him and the princess her ally together down the road. 😒

This is why I think he keeps doing the contracts or deals with her too. I don't think he intends to actually collect on them, but he knows if he made it too easy for her, she wouldn't be willing to come to him or trust him.
