I suppose people talked more about the ML and SML here not because the others were not interesting but because they were the center of the story. There were some scene stealing characters in BR. Su Zhe was great. Mu Ciling was outstanding. The actors did great job in portraying the roles. For me who loved and enjoyed TBOY, it was Bai Shu's Xiao Ruofeng.
No one denied that the 'original' Su Muyu shone brightly in both previous dramas. Despite wearing all black and looked lonely all the time, the actor captured everything about the character. He was my TBOY's scene stealer. But I think Gong Jun has also done a very good job as Su Muyu. Not because the writer said so, but because he made me engaged with the story.
Chang Huasen is a very good actor. Watching him in two dramas back to back should easily make viewers see that he is far from just a pretty face. He did so well for both his totally different characters in BR and SAB.
The writer has the tendency to 'ask the viewers' to treat his work as a stand alone when inconsistencies occured. It happened with DY and again with BR 😅. It is also weird for me, because it is fine if SCH became terrible, since even the characters in BR mentioned that only SMY was different from the rest of Anhe, just like it was said in TBOY. The others were ruthless assassins, despite their visually pleasing appearances. They were the bad people in TBOY, with SMY as the exception.
BR is a very entertaining drama for me and a good reminder of my still the best of 3, TBOY. I rewatched TBOY right away feeling more 'knowledgable', about Xiao Ruofeng's story.

Don't worry. No one is going to attack you. ML does not deserve to be treated that way, if the FL is the 'ordinary girl' like in most Kdramas. But this FL is different. Baek Ahjin is the villainish protagonist. She is a sociopath and she uses the men as the 'steps' to reach to the higher place. Joonseo is the only one she at least feels any attachments. Keep watching. You may need to prepare tissues for the next episodes.
Do not let yourself be discouraged by the unreliable MDL rating. Beside to the wuxia genre enthusiasts, I am encouraging romance lovers who love cute interactions and not a whole sugary scenes to watch this drama. Despite having romance omitted from the genre and tag, all Zhou Munan's 3 dramas have romance between the ML and FL, and of all 3, Blood River has the cutest romantic relationship between the main couple.
Blood River Weibo's official page even 'promoted' the loveline between SMY and BHH and made cute gif files of their relationship, from day 1 encounter to the last episode, on the last airing day. I like their story so much, and had been wishing for that, ever since the writer mentioned about writing a drama for Su Muyu. He looked so lonely in both TBOY and DY that I thought his lover had died and made him the coldest looking assassin (now I know that he did think of her that way for 12 years)
I considered BR a very nice 'spin off' drama. It covered Su Muyu's adventure, the Anhe he cared about, the strong friendship with Su Changhe and the girl who melted his iceberg heart. It also delivered the story of important character in the previous 2 dramas. The bright star Xiao Ruofeng, his life story and the sad fate he got for loving and protecting his brother. And I like it that it stopped with good ending. Just like the writer wanted Baili Dongjun to have his happiness in DY, BR drama did not go through with the betrayal moments between Su Muyu and Su Changhe and ended their story with great friendship.

In this drama, Quan Jingting was the schemer while Hongye never bothered to sugarcoat anything so Jingting's words were more provocative and felt reliable than the truth. And also the fact that beside Hongye and Zhuo, all who had seen the black fox were dead.
Yiqi Alliance was like modern life parliament with useless politicians who care about their own welfare but the plot made sense. It is the spider siblings story that bring down this drama and the excessive screentime for the supporting characters' romance. It fell apart once they took Chengyi out of the screen and despite his dedication for this drama, he could not salvage this drama with 4 episodes left, not even with the awesome demonic Fugui and the last fighting scenes.

Blood River is a male centric drama focused on Su Muyu's story as the main plot, with the rest of the members coming second. Su Muyu's FL is Bai Hehuai while Mu Yumo's loveline is Tang Lianyue.

No matter how 'wild and weird' the drama writing could be, Cheng Yi always nailed his characters and scenes.
