That’s totally fair, especially for a romance. If the visual or emotional pairing doesn’t click early on, it’s really hard to stay invested no matter how good the story is.
For me, his visuals fall more into the character and presence category rather than conventional, polished perfection. He has a slightly mature, lived-in look that really depends on styling, role, and how the camera uses him.
I didn’t click with his visuals immediately either, but over time I started appreciating the expressiveness and the way his face carries emotion.
I will say, with this one, the dynamic shifts a bit as the episodes go on and the chemistry becomes more about rhythm and comfort than instant spark—but if it still doesn’t land for you, that’s completely valid. Not every flavour is meant to work for everyone, and romance dramas live or die on that connection.

If I’d seen him first in the republican drama with Zhang Jing Yi—the one where he completely won me over—I’d probably feel exactly the same way. First impressions really do a lot of heavy lifting.

And I agree, he clearly has that kind of star quality that goes beyond “perfect visuals.” My reply was more to the OP’s point, because I understand the dilemma—sometimes a pairing clicks instantly, and sometimes you need to sit with the flavour a bit longer. I get where you’re coming from. Everyone has their own aesthetic palette, and that initial visual harmony (or lack of it) really shapes the impressions. I can’t deny that I visually loved the FL with CL and HMH more. That said, I still really enjoy this pairing—their chemistry feels comfortable and natural to me, including visually.

Funny enough, when I first saw this ML (in a costume drama), it actually took me a while to warm up to him too, so I relate to that hesitation. But somewhere along the way, he completely won me over.

From the BTS clips, he does seem genuinely fond of her—he clearly finds her cute and hilarious—but I’ve noticed the same kind of ease and natural warmth with her other co-stars as well, like Cheng Lei and Hou Ming Hao. That makes me think there’s something about her personality and demeanor that puts her male co-stars at ease and invites those unguarded reactions.

Where the line falls between spontaneous feeling and very fine acting is hard to tell—and honestly, that ambiguity is part of what makes those moments so compelling. Whether instinct or intention, it works beautifully on screen.
