It was mostly silver and that’s not that much in the context of leading a comfortable life. In the latest episodes ML asks his aide to spend 350 silver taels on sheep for troops, so she didn’t have a huge fortune. Also, it’s probably that the cousin was just using her for money (at least, partially) so he didn’t really want her to stop making money.

Interestingly, in the novel FL got married to a different person then her & husband died out while on the road to exile. Then she was reborn as baby child of the servant family but had memories of her past life. So it was a lot more like what you had described, lol

At this point she’s a daughter of a slave (servant) and is no position to do anything. Her and her adopted parents are barely making ends meet so the main question is survival and, hopefully, earning enough to buy their freedom from indentured servitude. But it’s a very long drama so I’m sure eventually the plot will move into politics and FL & ML will do something (like restoring a different emperor). But for now FL just needs to live another day

Like others mentioned, that’s just the world the people live in and we’ve seen that in previous episodes too. That’s why FL had to pretend she didn’t know anything because otherwise they’d be hung like the other two servants who were most closest to the wife.

ZHHZ is Zheng He Hui Zi, the actress who plays Lady Du (Du Cuique). She’s a sister of ML’s aide and was brought into the household as gratitude for her brother saving the ML.

Every episode is a battle for survival as servants get killed/sold off all the time and FL & her friends are trying to thread the needle and not be killed/punished by master(s) or by masters’ enemies 🥺
