Kind of a bummer this drama ended up only with an overall 8.4 rating. I thought the overall story was pretty unique and yang yang’s acting was superb. Not to mention the beautiful way it was shot on location. It deserves a 9 imo.
I’m so excited for this drama. Nobody fights as well as Cheng Yi. He was superb in the Lotus Notebook. My only beef was that he engaged in so few fights there so super excited for this one. It looks like the drama has the same martial art expert and director.
It was high budget. Both Yang Yang's salary and the CGI (which was a bit dated) cost a lot.
Unrelated but I loved your review of the drama — didn’t quite catch some of the nuances of HL’s character and motivation so I really appreciated your observations. In general, I really enjoy and appreciate your insightful reviews of many of the Chinese dramas.
Loved the drama. Except for the part where Han Li goes to the capital and gets distracted by the blood cultivators which I thought was disconnected from the main story line. Otherwise beautiful development of characters — many are so rich and multifaceted — and reflections on life in general. I know many reviewers complained about the lack of romance but I found it refreshing and much more grounded in real life where you end up meeting all kinds of people before settling for the one.
Cheng Lei makes a great general in this drama but I didn’t think this role was as demanding and nuanced as the one he played in MJTY and even his guest role in FoF. Still a big fan of his but this goes to show that SML roles are often more interesting and memorable than ML ones in many Chinese dramas.
