you have your values from the "old world" (the existing hierarchical ordering of certain people becoming exacerbated by imperial colonial domination or influence) clashing with the values of the "new world" (human rights, dignity but in a neoliberal sense). people want to desperately retain those power structures. just this time with the previously marginalized folded in. instead of questioning and abolishing the underlying issues in the first place (imperial colonial domination, racial capitalism, cishetpatriarchal supremacy through all of these). and then cultures from "the global south" or those countries able to grow in the wake of horrors REALLY value that hierarchy as inoculation against being dominated or influenced again. my dad can use the cultural excuse, his fear of british-caused genocide of our people, by casting respecting your children as "western values". however, i genuinely believe that being filial is part of our nation-making which is why it upsets people that younger generations want nothing to do with toxic, abusive, narcissistic family dynamics.
so....adults and parents are always GOOD and they're ALWAYS right! and even though they ruined your life...they loved you! you just needed to give them time. and make sure you don't do anything to shake people's faith in the nation! its' really easy to inscribe that culturally. such a shame.

imo that's not always true. back in the day it was worse, they were forgiving them left and right. also think about how overbearing, and frankly inappropriate, a lot of their parents are in the recent ones. yet they don't get called out for it. they do have a lot of reconciliations for what appears to be milder behavior but is part of a larger issue.
