Well I was satisfied with BFTB ending with recent xianxia standard since they did more than just stare at each other and the end.
I don't like the new trend for other xianxia going by the very abrupt HE...
But then when I look at the Princess and the Werewolf that is actually a decent satisfying ending for the main pair... So that lead me to question it's up to the writers whether they want to break the trend or not...
But looking at IQIYI... They are really good at deleting nice scenes there 😒😒 they deleted one I was looking forward to seeing (their date)! 😭😭

To be honest I have read the novel too but I love the changes to the characterization that they did with the drama and especially with the whole back story gives the main pairing more depth which I love better.

Back from the Brink ending is a happy ending to most of us which watched the drama because it didn't leave any room of doubt when we saw that ending at the end. Logically it ties in with what happened that lead to that point.
It is a plus points for many fans who love the drama because it isn't just the main pairing that has a happy ending but the other characters got their closure and happy ending too.
In most aspect it really did better than the novel being less tragic
In today standard for xianxia genre, it is a happy ending that many fans (me included), that while yeah we wish for them to have a child together (like in the novel extra), but we are satisfied with the happy ending in Back from the Brink drama ending because they did more than just stare at each other and "the end", so yeah do give that drama a go.
It's the same writer as LY7T as well and I truly recommend this to all xianxia lovers.
The main pairing is really loveable in that one too!
