Took me to the second episode to look at the director. I was trying to figure out why almost every actor from…
It helps me to understand why it's often bad.

Yeah Squid Game is a mush-up of many films/manga before it. I still think they plagiarized Japanese survival Mangas…
Koreans are good at rendering and execution, but I'm agree (with exceptions) that they aren't as creative as japaneses. By the way, Koreans copy-paste also their own content. It's why so many kdrama songs are bland or almost the same than the one of another drama.

it might be interesting for you to rewatch in terms of what the story is because to me it's just simple tropey…
If you focus on nice characters, maybe you could like HP. Characters are well made, it's what the writer can do good. But about everything else, it's a hell of boredom, "tell don't show" and even confusion.
But I think you would be mad at some point about the couple of first season. The writer is known for playing game with audience, at "who guess who will be the couple". This results in fan wars because people ship couples. It's a bit insane.

Then in HP, the writer ships finally the unexpected couple in an anti-climatic way, when everything was set so it shouldn't happen. But in a couple of scenes, suddenly, here we are. I think you would probably have a great crisis of rage. πŸ˜‚
I'm not particularly focused on this kind of flaw in kdramas, and if I was disturbed by that in this one, it should be of epic proportion for other people.

Sorry, a bit off-topic, but as you speaks about that.
Actress Ha Ji Won is pretty and good at action scenes. So, even when the drama gives her a boyish aspect, it's impossible to trust it. πŸ˜„πŸ₯°
I'm not sure about the 2FL. Isn't it Kim Sa Rang?
First time she comes in the screen, I was 😍.
Yep really a lot more pretty. She won Miss Korea prize by the way.

I hate fart jokes. For me as per Yumi I just want a good story. This was not a goid story because the FL and ML…
Lot of human flaws. I always watch with a stepback without putting too much of myself and my own opinions. So I like dramas with shitty characters, but when there a consequences to their acts, complications, possibly tragedy.

You are right that the FL is miserable to stick to this guy who doesn't care about her. Love and attraction are irrational. And she's as bad as him when she understands that the jalousy strategy could get him. Not fair for the 2nd male lead. Life is sometimes unfair. I don't remember what becomes this character. I vaguely remembers he get a compensation but not sure. There are countless second leads just here to suffer in kdramas, because everyone suffered to see the one you want going with someone else. So, we can root for those characters.

One of my fav dramas is The Penthouse, were almost all the characters are bad. It's the contract the writer makes with the audience: give us twists and shocking scenes, with dark comedy and satire. Create injustice and make us mad when the bad ones triumph, and assassinate them or make them suffer like hell when their time has come. I'm not sure you could like this drama. πŸ˜…

The drama use tragic stories more as plot-device with short-time resolution than real tragedy. Like nothing is…
I don't have a lot of time and didn't watch many recent dramas. I have also a feeling of "it's less good than before". Maybe people find NGNL good enough because other dramas today are even worst. It's not a good sign however. If someday I want to watch a romcom, I will probably dig into older dramas.
Kbeauty Sep 13, 2024
It's a "jerk dude, courageous woman" drama. I liked it, but it's not in my fav.
There were excellent moments:
- The fall. Someone falling is really not something that can make me laugh. But THIS fall!! Woo!
- I like a lot the actress.
- Main actor is also good at being unpleasant.
- Hospital room scene, let's fart together to be confortable. Oh-Shit.
There where other WTF situations, like:
Live a week with the two men to test the good one? Outrageously funny.
My main problem with the drama was it's too long. There were slow and boring scenes on the whole.

About main thematic: although I don't subscribe to it, I found interesting that the last resort the get love was to make the partner jaleous. It's kinda true in the short run: make someone jalous works! But I don't trust it for true love on the long run. Anyway, it's the concept of the drama, I take it as it is as I enjoyed watching it.

Review Yumi's Cells
Creator of this drama is my all-time favorite screenwriter Song Jae-Jung. It was a shock for me to learn for once, she didn't create the concept, but used something from a manhwa. What?

Then I understood why: somehow, it's the same dynamic of her dramas, two worlds. Just here it's the one of cells. So for sure, she was the best one to do that. At first, she wasn't the writer: a partner who did dramas with her was in charge, as well as a new writer (probably a former assistant of one of the two seasoned writers). But as she was in the project, and because of her awesome creative skills, she started to write it too. I can understand. They were thinking about creating the drama, and in an interview I could read, it's crazy. Instead of coming to a meeting with ideas and talk about that, she cames with a scene written in ten different ways. Unearthly amount of work.

We can feel in the drama the ping-pong communications between the 3 writers, because scenes are highly reworked and twisted. For example:
- Season 1, episode 6, the transparent bathglass situation. It's peak of comedy with a so prepared and structured comical situation. It wasn't in the manwha!
- Season 2, a situation is highly twisted, when the male lead meet the FL parents, and everything goes wrong, with many little situations twisting the main one.
I made note of all the tricks used in the dramas, and the visual inserts, very creative and usefull in the story. Like: a guy you see only as a cardboard effigy because you never really noticed him.

The drama also propose deep content, under the surface, about everyday little psychological mechanisms. And it's hooking hard.
Your vision of the heroine is kinda true. It's a common woman with flaws. It's the bet of the story: propose something hooking with an everyday woman without great accomplishement and everyday woman flaws. I don't take that as something bad, but as something of the story. She maybe a bit unlikeable, but we dig deep in her, and it's the main point.

The manhwa is long and had several male leads having romantic situations with her. So it's quite normal she used two of them already. If there is a season 3, maybe we'll get the final one and a more concrete resolution of the FL grow. I don't know yet if they will do it. It was in the starting block, but I learned recently that Song Jae-Jung write a sci-fi drama with a female lead. Called "Go west", what is an information not know yet and I know it only because I stalk her information on korean website. So for now, I don't know the future of the Yumi Cell saga.
I can just say I liked the dramas, but still a bit less than her previous mind-blowing dramas.
Kbeauty Sep 13, 2024
I found that excellent about storytelling, and I liked a lot "lawless layer" by same writer (a kind of spagghetti western in korea). I don't remember well the points you mention about a rapist past of the ML, and I'd need to rewatch to make sens of it. This drama has a bad point however: the last episode is so bad. It's like a resolution after tension, without anything engaging.

Review Call It Love
I watched several episodes and even while the pace is slow, I found that good. Alas, I dropped, I couldn't stand the strech image during flashbacks. The pink filter everywhere also started to break my nerves. It's a nice effect but... used all along the drama?! Tss tss tss.
Without that, it probably deserves a 8.5.

You hit really hard on the drama. Even without that ugly point, I'm determined to never watch that because I suffered like hell while watching "Hospital Playlist" by same writer. It was almost a list of points of "what you should never do in a screenplay", so I took notes, and even used it to fix some scenes I made with a potential problem that could be similar to the bad narration of HP.

I like time travel stories, but I never watched this one. Everybody says it's a mess. I guess I'll need to try by myself, even if I'm disappointed. As it's one of my fav genre, I can make the effort. I couldn't read your whole review, because I need to avoid spoilers.

Review Secret Garden
I can't really judge this drama about thematic of "strong woman" or "girl power".

It was a time when many dramas were made with the dynamic of "the guy is a jerk", "the woman is courageous and work hard". And more, by the most famous kdrama writer Kim Eun Suk, known to be somehow outrageous or proposing stunning lines out of the box. It's a writer I can both love or hate, depending of her dramas, often in different styles. I can't buy it when she's too cheesy, and she's sometimes a queen of cheese.
I didn't remember the male character didn't change. As a generality, male jerks change. Let's remember a classic with huge rating "Shining Inheritance". Male character change. And in a story, most of the time, characters change, it's what makes the story. So, I find that a bit sad.

I didn't rewatched fully the drama. It's an important point of Kim Eun Suk carrer, when she gave a scandalous interview, saying she wasn't here to do art, and wanted to propose a light story to please maximum of audience. Then, she did "secret garden" to apply her new philosophy. Hug! I was a bit angry to read the interview, but ok, I get her point: productors want success and good rating, and she did it!

I rewatched first episodes, and it was really better than what was in my memory. While the high-concept isn't even into action (the body switch happens when? Episode 4 or 5?), the comedy was already harsh and funny, with the so stupid jerk character and his lines. His stupid clothes (of high price), and the dialogue scene in the hospital (Episode 1?). Here I'd need to rewatch the whole, but it's not a drama I would give a 2/10, probably a 6 or 7. I can't know, I'd need to rewatch all.

This one: I've drop the drama. It wasn't good or bad, just I felt some boredom. Some scenes were funny, but I couldn't stick to the whole. Even when I really like main actress and Park Hae Jin, he was so awesome in "And from now on showtime". About Park Sung Woong, it's like a curse. I find him good actor and he as a FACE ! Damn scary face. But in a weird way, I noticed every drama he did was a bit floopy to my taste. Bad luck.
As I didn't completed the drama and had this feeling of "I don't need to watch more", I'm willing to trust your conclusion.

it's really meh I want to like it more but too many Ahole characters. Too much infidelity being glossed over stupid…
Sure, it will be funny to read, even when you comment about dramas I liked. I'm curious to read a point of view, and check if I find that right on some points or wrong. I may comment, or point out some details. Of course, in a friendly way!

Sadly, my fav drama doesn't get a good ranking in your list (but nothing that bad too). So I guess I can't propose you to read my screenplay of season 2, except if you are really curious. Else, you can check my blog with other screenplays, two shorts and a kdrama first 2 hours. I did also a first episode of another kdrama but didn't posted it because I made only the western screenplay and didn't had time to transform it in the visual korean format one.

I don't post review, I even deleted the ones I did. I think I don't have talent for that. I tried to write an article for MDL, but now I think I was a bit too enthousiastic, and I was wrong about some points. Well, mostly the main point in the title. But I did that to get a catch. Ah!

The drama use tragic stories more as plot-device with short-time resolution than real tragedy. Like nothing is…
Hi, I don't remember the scene you are mentioning. It sounds bad.
I watched countless time the "comical side romance", in any kdramas or daily series, or even popular movies (not really good ones). A romance with nothing real or serious a little bit. As I was finding that funny when I was a kid, I consider it now lazy writing, it's a too cheap clichΓ©.

About this drama, the CEO romance should be more difficult. I saw a spin-off is prepared with the two characters. So, if the romance is already over, how the writer could do something in the spin-off?

Anyway, I won't watch it. I'm even hesitant to watch "Private life", the previous drama of this writer now. Even if the pitch looks good. No Gain No Loss pitch too was good, it's why I tried the drama, but it was a disappointement.

Title No Gain, No Love Spoiler
Yup it gets better but it definitely depends on the person watching it too. The person before me said that they…
Hi, I answer here to all your points:

- I didn't watched Lovely Runner. Lack of time and bad echo from friends after some point, even the start of the drama looked to please them. Maybe I should have, so I could post harsh criticism of the drama? The thread was certainely funny with all those angry fans. πŸ˜…

- IOTNO: I somehow liked it, with great lead actors. Pace was a bit slow. I put on hold once, I had something else to do. I tried to continue and could stick back to it for some episodes. Then again I had to put on-hold. because after months the drama was like a bulky wardrobe in my list, so it's the kind of drama I put on-hold or drop, but I don't really hate it.

- By the way, I have many dramas on hold that I never finished, while I liked them. Sometimes I don't need to watch the end. There is one of my favorite drama "Queen Seon Deok". The drama was so popular that they added 10 more episodes, but I didn't watched them, because I lose interest after the death of my favorite character, who was also the engine of the drama.

- I'm sometime critical of kdramas and find MDL interactions funny. It's awesome how people can be triggered when you don't like their puppy drama. However, as I'm used to this kind of interaction since years, I avoid any personnal attack on audience. It's the right of people to enjoy what they want and anyway, there is nothing to say about that. But in the other way, I should give my opinion too about the drama. It's something valuable for random people who have trouble with the content. You can see it here, OP is wondering why people like so much the drama when OP finds that "Meh". It would be strange no-one answer. But as the drama is at episode 6 now, there is high chance nobody answer, because people disliking already dropped it since a while. I'm here just because I binge-watched last week. And probably other people answering too. Next week, there will probably be no-one. I don't think I will hang on the topic. It happens I stay on a bad drama because it's so bad that just the comment section makes my day. But No Gain No Loss isn't bad enough for that. πŸ˜”

- I'm also used to read bad comments about the dramas I love. Sometimes there is some truth about the comments and it's enriching. It makes me question myself about my writing (as I write screenplays). Sometimes the comment just miss the target and I can see how it's wrong. Anyway, it's a good sport to do that, so to be used to keep my cool. Kdramas have a core audience, and some dramas just can't please everyone.

- I allow myself to change opinion. I disliked a lot Vincenzo at start. Quickly dropped it. Then, I still tried to watch more, and when the OTT comedy was a miss at first, it became really funny at some point. (I'd say half/half, depending on the scenes). All the drama was a bit second-degree and easy to watch. I put that on hold dozen of times, but continuing to watch it, one or two episodes at a time, as it's a drama that doesn't need to keep memory of everything and easy to continue watching from scratch.

- People taste about dramas is impossible to understand. I check quickly in your list, and we share some favorite dramas. I could expect you also dislike the same dramas I dislike? But nope, it doesn't work that way. It's very random. As I'm tired of romcom and don't expect to watch a good romcom from this year (I should watch an older one), I go back to thriller, or more exactly "deadly game" genre. I started watching Pyramid Games, the kind of drama that makes me feel at home. It's a good one.

The one thing , I don't like about the show , very subjective, is the story. I would have liked it to be a comedy…
The drama use tragic stories more as plot-device with short-time resolution than real tragedy. Like nothing is serious. It's a mistake. Comedy comes from a tragedy the writer make us believe. As a known example, the famous classic movie "the appartement", by writer Billy Wilder. It's a story of a guy renting an appartement, so people can have extra-conjugal love affairs into it. Only, at one point, he falls in love with a woman... and this woman is about to have a meeting with his boss in this appartement. I mean, real shit drops on the character, it's sad and tragic, taken seriously by the writer. And it's from that comes best comedy.
