She's my favorite writer, so it's a bit normal I look for informations. Nevertheless, I have also another bunch of favorite writers. All these talented people do things... I can't do! Maybe it's what I love, they surprise me. But I'm hard on their track, looking closely, learning fast. Song Jae-Jung is my target as well as my master.
My season 2 drama is 32h screentime. Yeah, the double of season 1. But when you love the crazy universe of W, it's a blessing!
I ended to understand than the main antagonist of W isn't the faceless killer, or the killer with Sung-Moo face, or that prosecutor. It's the high-concept! Producing always something unexpected. And even the hero with a superhuman mind can't expect it. So, I did that too! With new concepts added to the ones we know. ;-)
Developping a high-concept is key for plot-twists and emotional moments, but often, writers doesn't dig enough. SJJ does of course, but the others? It's rare. "365 repeat the year", "Sisyphus the myth" and "Kairos" did a good job about that. Well maybe a bit blurry for Sisyphus, but I admit that for W, SJJ was a bit blurry too, and I had to rewatch a lot to understand how her concept works. Some few more explanations during part 2 could be better. But anyway, when it's a masterpiece, we don't nitpick the few little flaws.
But for "My Demon", not much digging in the high-concept. I'm not too harsh, the writer had some ideas, but it needed to push it more, to get a 16 hours drama fully enjoyable without dead time. I'm sure it was possible. Alas, the writer didn't do that, so it remains a sub-standard drama of the fantasy category with the usual trope "a man with (deity power, robot, alien, etc)" meet a pretty woman with strong personnality.
Some writers aren't good with complex fantasy (or fantastic/sci-fi) high-concept. I put into that the most famous Korean writer Kim Eun-Suk, who screwed up for plotless boring "Goblin" or ultra confusing "King Eternal Monarch", but was the awesome writer she is on "The Glory".

The writer is a machine idea, because she started her carrer on sitcom, and co-writed about 800 episodes of 30 min. Ok, it's low quality, but thinking about the context: the most stressful you can imagine. Daily sitcom, everyday, have to deliver the shit! She was sucessful as she could put some comedy that made survive "kick..." (sorry I don't remember full title) at a time sitcoms had a downfall.
Then, she started drama, made a parody of US series Lost. I watched a bit, but low quality, first comedy gags quite loud. Maybe it's better after. But that say to me she have watched some US show, fantastic ones. And maybe Twilight Zone or great movies like Inception.
Then she made a drama I didn't like "Coffee House", rather boring, about a writer who don't know what he want to do. Quite the feeling I have about the writer of the show. After that, she knew what she want to do: fantasy dramas, but with a sci-fi/fantastic feeling. More "Twilight Zone" than Goblin like.
At this point, she wrote Nine Time Travel and Queen Hyun's man. Two time travel stories breaking the Korean recipe about this kind of story. Any time travel story before was "Someone travel in time at start of the drama, and come back at end of the drama". Instead Song Jae Jung made complex scifi pieces, with back and forth in time, lot of impacts about time changes and twisted high-concept.
Then, she wrote her masterpiece: W. And as I watched her previous drama, I could see they were like drafts for this one. It's something that put down any western series about fantastic high-concept, very meta, and lot of plot-twists. The drama was lucky because it got renewed actors and a good director, as well as a great background music musicians team. But it's often like that when a drama break-out, it's a bit like a miracle.
People were certainly motivated by the script. It's what come from interview. Main actress Han Hyo-Joo stopped her cinema carrer to play in this drama because she said "it's the best script I ever read and I'll never have luck to play into something like that again". Director too was greatly motivated, understanding the complicated script and put his touch everywhen he could to make it better.
Indeed, it made room for other dramas a bit like that (I can't make the list), but then kdramas were ok to go into something more complex about scifi or fantasy concepts. Even nothing could surpass W, because it's a crazy mindfuck with a lot of meta, "mise en abime". But I remember some nice dramas coming after (365 repeat the year, for example).
The writer published her script, I translated it, and I've readed it, again and again, studying how it's made, how is written a kdrama screenplay. The screenplay is awesome and each time I watch a drama, I can often see good things, but nothing that stand up compared to this. Here I'm speaking about technical aspects, how are used montages, scenes transition, episode structure and scenes order.
The reason why I was studying her script, obviously, it was about 5 years ago: I had too many ideas (it's a bit like a curse) so was cornered and had no other choice than writing this sequel. Yeah, can't explain more now about that, but it's also a pain in the ass. Anyway, I was already writing in the screenplay style (present tense, direct, visualy, etc), only I didn't have enough knowledge about that. Can be formating, scene mastery, or anything related to screenwriting. So I studied that, and as I was passioned with a clear goal, I did that 5 time faster than usual.
I wrote a bit with screenplay western format, but damn-it, korean one is so much better. It need normalisation (it's the format flaw), but anything is so much more alive in the script. On my blog, there is an article "reading tips". I made it to help to read my stuff, because I don't use only korean format, but also visuals. So, even it's easy to understand and intuitive, I prefered to make it clear and explain all. This article also explain, even it wasn't the goal, how are made korean screenplays, and the difference with western format. Then you understand why they are more alive.

Ofc, it's not a demon or goblin, but something new. ;-) Then, it takes a little time to develop, as the story have arcs and progress.

It's a scam. The writer gives first episodes script. Sells the drama to producer, sign for 16h content. Everybody's Ok, actors and director too. Start shooting.
Mainwhile, writer have nothing to tell past episode 8. SO: do a cliffhanger for each episode, and the content of episode are endless fillers, slug, drags, terrible slapstick not-funny comedy with weird little sound effects, until reaching final point.
It's very embarassing for actors, producers and all these people, because mainwhile they have to promote the drama. No choice, money is king. They have to smile and lie before cameras, when they know they were scammed and the drama is a piece of shit.
At least, if you watch episode 2, you'll find the best scene of the drama.
I've got the same opinion at this point of the drama. Then at ep 7, you enter a kind of boring nightmare. Ep 9+, the drama is dead, and comedy became cringe slapstick.
If their chemistry was insane, then in the back half of the drama, when they're cuddling on the couch together.…
By the way Do Hee often falls asleep in the drama. During a scene, she sleeps and Gu Won says "boring to the end". I guess he was speaking about the drama?
