I think NDS does not really love SDM at all, and he is actually doing all this because he is being competitive with HJP. In fact there are quite a few scenes where he taunts his relationship with SDM to HJP.
We all remember that scene where HJP calls NDS company a failure that will never amount to much. I think NDS took this by heart, and has been spiteful, jealous and competitive with HJP.
Also keep in mind, he finds out that Grandma means a lot to HJP. And what does he do in the next episode? He brings her to a date, and pretty much tries to get close to Grandma, the same way he does to SDM.
NDS won't be satisfied until HJP is alone. We keep thinking that Yong San is the only one who wants revenge on HJP, but in reality, it is NDS who wants revenge on HJP for a few harsh words.
So this whole series has just been about NDS taking away HJP's true love in SDM. It's like his revenge on HJP so to speak. It's quite diabolical, and i'm surprised I didn't see it earlier.
Now that NDS has SDM's heart, his next step is to be richer than HJP by going to 2STO, and his revenge arc will be complete.

I agree, SDM is not HJP, he has allowed the image of who SDM is thru the letters cloud his vision on who SDM truly is. He could really be doing a lot better than SDM. But he has allowed his childhood love for her to cloud his judgement.
