I kind of start to get the feeling you are talking about your own experience, instead of the show. That we are not talking about HJP and SDM anymore, but about you and somebody who may have hurt you by being harsh.
I'd like to give some advice to you if you don't mind.

I agree, SDM is not HJP, he has allowed the image of who SDM is thru the letters cloud his vision on who SDM truly is. He could really be doing a lot better than SDM. But he has allowed his childhood love for her to cloud his judgement.

Since that time, his company never faces any real danger.
But for HJP, we literally don't know how his story will end. His character arc is prone to many theories, and it is exciting.

No, the cheating on the test didn't matter, he was still a genius. NDS mentality is that he allows small negativities discount the the big positive things. And he never taps into his potential, often wasting it. What the first few episodes shows is that some people need the right push from the right person to achieve their potential.
For NDS, the one pushing him has always been SDM. It was only her support he needed. But for SDM, NDS gave her the means to reach her goals, but only as a tool, and not as a person. If NDS had not chosen her, and she had chosen another company, she most likely could have still succeeded due to her drive.
I disagree on the notion that NDS feels he didn't deserve certain things. Quite the contrary actually, because of his background, because of his parents, he felt that he has nothing in his life. So whenever he sees this little miracles, or winds of luck, he is quick to latch on.
A person who had more confidence would not latch on to every single positive thing that comes along, but due to NDS lack of confidence, every good thing that comes along he latches on tightly. As his confidence grew, he grew some clarity, and started choosing what he latches on to.
The character of NDS really has a lot to do with bad writing. Yes, NDS is selfish, immature and insecure. The problem is the writers dialed those emotions too much, that most people had trouble relating to NDS, regardless of his backstory. The writers did not find a proper balance between HJP. They knowingly mired NDS character in the mid, while unknowingly set up HJP to be the tragic hero.
They then created a time skip, as part of the plot to "fix" nds poor qualities. It just feels like lazy writing Good writers don't need time skips, as time skips cheapen a lot of the emotions audiences have felt for the characters. Plus the time skip is supposed to be 3-4 years. People get married and have kids and do a lot of great and bad things in that span of time.
I write about HJP cowardice as being his biggest flaw. He still has a lot to grow character wise. NDS has always had his trajectory set in stone. In fact when we were first introduced to Alex from 2STO, I already knew that NDS would eventually come to work for 2STO, his arc was in that sense very predictable and not as exciting.
HJP on the other hand, as you said is already successful, so the hole in his heart arc was quite unpredictable. I think until now, I dont know how his arc will end, as he continues to sabotage his own path to success with his cowardice. Which makes for a more exciting character.
Yeah, to be honest as I've mentioned before, the show in it's first 2 episodes showed a lot of promise. But as each new episodes have come out, it's become a very cliched love triangle story, where the ending has become very very predictable. The show is no longer a smart show, just your standard cliche love triangle type of drama. And that is where I think the writers have drop the ball. The only interesting character is HJP. WIJ could have been one as well, but she has not much screen time.
We cannot judge HJP's path to success, we are not shown his path, so we should not judge how hard or easy it was.
3 Main characters. WIJ, with her amount of screen time doesnt' count. I no longer look at the whose better, whose good, whose bad. I'm looking forward more to the remaining character arc. And SDM and NDS arc for me is already done, their path to success and ending is highly predictable and thus boring to me.
HJP is the one i'm invested in, because I don't know where or how he will end up, and that is what makes me excited.
