Something that can be fixed by having a supportive girlfriend, which SDM is. But it could have been any other girl who is supportive and it would still be ok. Prior to meeting SDM, NDS wasn't exactly looking for a girlfriend, he was doing ok with the support he was getting from Cheul San and Yong San.
HJP's biggest flaw is he didn't think he had a flaw. Only when he meets SDM does he realize, for the last 15 years, he has been living life with a hole in his chest. A hole that cannot be filled by just any girl, but only by SDM, because she is his first love. A hole so big, that he would throw everything he has worked hard for, to fill it. Her letters help him during his dark days.
