The death was unnecessary story-wise. They didn't have anything to do with the uprising and the dad was lost after…
Wow, you really didn't get the story, did you? First, MH is the ONLY character whose death was necessary to drill-in the fact that a political uprising caused the death of MANY such uninvolved, and perfectly nice human beings (like MH herself) *just* for the sake of some power-hungry politicians and army people Countless lives were lost that May, and MH's death represents them all, artistically. Nobody else's death would have an equal impact. MH was the MVP, and her death would hurt the most. Hence, she had to die, from an objective narrative POV.
Secondly, her death has EVERYTHING to do with the uprising. It's like saying Jack Dawson didn't have anything to do with the iceberg that hit Titanic. -_- The uprising caused the army to go livid on their OWN people. MH was a casualty to that terror, dying a nameless death- just *one more life lost*, but the government didn't care. That they killed off even a NURSE. MH would have likely lived a peaceful life, had she not been caught up in it all. The fact that she was a healthcare worker, and not a protester, is more heartbreaking.
Thirdly, yes, among the four MAIN leads, only MH dies. But off-camera, there is a significantly high death-toll. The hippie-friend, the nice police-officer, the child on the missing-poster, the grandpa Soo-chan protested for, and so many more. So of-course, like in the times of any disaster, natural or human-created.... there are a lot of casualties. It still counts, even if they haven't introduced us personally to every one of those 8,000 people that died that summer.
I started to wonder about the full version of the script."comparative post of youth of may’s script and lee…
This is why I think Do-Hyun has great potential (and so does Min-Si)... great improv skills. And the 'i will cooooooooo~~ntinue to like you Myung-Hee Ssi'.... oof, that was sooo good <3 Also, everytime DoHyun sheds a tear, it breaks me. His outright 'clutching his heart while sobbing out loud' when Myung Hee doesn't look back, that moment completely destroyed me. He's SOOOOO good with his emotional, ugly-crying scenes <3
DoHyun is such a funny guy IRL, plus his comic-timing is mind-blowing.!!! You wouldn't guess because all his script-choices just make you ugly-cry. Gosh. T_T Sir.. why? Please pick a funny, light-hearted drama next. I don't think I can bear to see you in pain anymore, even if it is for a camera :/
Political turmoil can't NOT end in a tragedy. The fact that I felt LDH and JHI gave off very similar vibes from DoHyun's earliest projects... the fact that I watched Youth of May with a heavy heart, dreading the ending, but loving it nonetheless.... the fact that Snowdrop is set around the successor event to Gwangju Uprisings.... The knives are coming at me, and I'm planning to enjoy all of it. If Snowdrop is even 50% as good as Youth of May, i'd be super happy. Something about tragic, doomed romances is so forbiddingly appealing T_T Cannot *wait* for December. This is going to be Sooooooo GOOD <3
The summer of 1980, my dad finished his graduation and came back home.... May/ June. He is 2 years younger than what Hee-Tae is (medical is a 5 year major, plus Hee Tae decided to take a drop year). Gosh, to think my father could have been in Hee-Tae's shoes, sends a chill down my spine. 80's, afterall were a turbulent time for the youth.... all over the world.
For those of you asking 'does somebody die?'..... It's the equivalent of asking if a movie set around WW-II has casualties? I mean, we all know what happened with the sinking of the Titanic. Did it stop you from watching the movie? This drama is set around a bloody political turmoil of the 80's. A real-life event. Of course, there will be a significantly high death-toll. If you can't stomach the idea of it, then this is not for you.
Those focusing on if the leads make it out alive, you guys are completely missing the big picture: just how *many* lives were lost that May, and continue to affect living, breathing people in 2021.
Same! I did some research after this drama’s first couple episodes and it’s quite sad :/ prepare for that
I'm guessing I'll find you in the Snowdrop comment section too. Will arrive with my Kleenex. Am I too foolish to think that will have a 'happy ending'? Maybe xD
ok but just wanted to say i feel you, i waited for the finale to finish before doing my skincare for this exact…
Oh my god, the only reason i stopped myself from bawling for the full episode was because of skincare, lmao. But after the 2021 time-skip, all efforts were futile. My retinol was washed away by bucketful of salty tears T_T
Myung Soo. Got not only his noona, but his dad killed. in the SAME friggin way, in a span of 24 hours. Kid never…
I'm super pissed because MH was the HERO of the show, and NOTHING less. She kept saving the day, but the writers gave her a silent, anonymous death under the starry sky, as the plot-armor over the protagonists timed-out. How anticlimactic!!!! :/ :/
Like it was a waste of her existence. The least Myung Soo could do was to grow up and become an Olympic sprinter for the national team, but nope, he became a priest.
The twist at the end is SO good, y'all!....The old bum in the hat, and the skeleton. Oooof! More than half the peeps got half of it wrong atleast. Kudos writers <3 This is coming from somebody who's tired at the predictability of k-dramas with their ep.8 kisses, and ep.11/ ep.15 (pre-finale) mandatory break-ups :D
So, let me get this straight. Worst bro of the year award goes to:
Myung Soo. Got not only his noona, but his dad killed. in the SAME friggin way, in a span of 24 hours. Kid never learns. No wonder he became a priest to cleanse his soul from all that guilt, after that. I rooted for you lil' bear. But you suck.
The little brothers are adorable... even the SML (Soo Ryeon's brother) won some major brownie-points with me <3 Dysfunctional families for sure... but the brothers are MVPs! :D

doesn't get enough credit, istg! T_T

Watch her become equally as stunning, in a few years! <3
