Because China has a ban on BL (gay media in general) on TV for a while now. The Spirealm managed to slip past the censorship checks due to the cleverness of the show runners, taking advantage of some loopholes, but once it aired, within two hours it was taken down again because censorship realised it was a censored BL. Simply put: BL is not allowed to come out of China for the last few years, that was the only issue.

Keep in mind when watching Cn BLs, that no Chinese censored BL is bromance. Bromance is its own separate genre that is portrayed differently than censored BLs. Technically, in every Cn censored BL, 'bromance' is a FORCED genre/tag, the producers literally have no choice but to call it bromance. They're not ALLOWED to label it any other way.
When watching Cn censored BLs, it's quite obvious that the relationships are NOT meant to be platonic, as per the source material, rather the relationships are portrayed in a way that is not overtly sexual/physical, but still romantic in nature. This goes back as far as Advance Bravely. It's clear when watching that no censored Cn BL male lead characters are 'just friends'.

A lot is different in the book. The biggest difference in the series premise is that it's a virtual reality game world created by a human, whereas in the novel, it's an actual alternative universe/realm.
Also, while the term NPC is used in the book as general term to refer to the beings inside the world of the doors, they are no video game characters, they're all real. Nanzhu (Lanzhu in the series) is also 100% real and he is the "12th door", i.e, the end of the survival world game and also the final and overall God of all the doors. Nanzhu basically leaves being the God of the door world because he falls in love Qiushi (Juishi in the series) and takes on humanoid form and wipes his memory in order to pursue Qiushi as a 'human'. So Nanzhu is real and not a human, unlike in the series where he isn't real, just a virtual reality character made up of data. (because if Cn censorship)
Obsidian also belonged to Qiushi in the novel, he was the leader, but Nanzhu also wiped Quishi's memory after Qiushi cleared the 11th and final door, resetting him to door one so both of them -without any memory- could go through the doors together and 'get to know each other'. Nanzhu basically took some parts of Qiushi's history in order to have a back story for himself and he added a few things, all to make himself seem more 'human'.
Other things: -there are more doors in the novel, with more detail, more violence, more gore and horror. The series is also much more sentimental and emotional than the novel, and Nanzhu is a colder person than Lanzhu's character. - characters like Li Dongyuan and Zaozao are not given as much importance in the novel as the series, and there are more character deaths as well as the existence of some characters who aren't use in the series and another gay male character who is genderswapped in the series. - Nanzhu crossdresses as Ruan Baijie in almost every door, it features much more as a part of the story, and Qiushi also crossdresses in one of the doors. - there is no censorship, Nanzhu and Qiushi becomes an established couple and the ending is totally different, because there is no 50 year time lapse and separation, just 1 year and then they're reunited and they end up together.

Because Gao Dawei is a plot device created for the series, he doesn't exist in the novel. There is no virtual game in the novel at all, it's a real alternate world. So there was no reason to place visual importance on Gao Dawei's character in the series, they just needed a character to refer to as the game's creator who had a personal connection to Jiushi. Considering the ring was probably a door item (based on the scenario of jewelry given to Qiushi by Nanzhu in the novel inside the same door) it's likely the ring served its function as a tracking device, leading Lanzhu to find Jiushi a few times when he was in trouble, and then it would have been used up and disappeared. Hence we we don't see it in the later episodes.
It depends on how you look at it since the ending is left open to a certain amount of interpretation on the viewers…
