But regardless of frequency as a plot component, a sexual assault scene should never, ever have sexy music and soft mood lighting, for example. Nor should it ever be contextualized as erotic.

OMG! That is so good to know. There are two specifically awful toxic shows right now. And I just needed something sweet. I am currently loving all over La Cuisine for its sweetness. But I needed something with a bit more scope. I am hoping to really love this one.

Tone is about setting a mood for the audience so they know how the scene is meant to be emotionally perceived. And it is communicated in everything from lighting to scene framing, music and more. My hope is that the moments of sexual assault and/or violence in the show have a properly grave tone to convey the terrible acts in that context, rather than giving them a sexual tone and thereby mishandling them as erotic in nature.
