The writers should've made Pha's reason for disappearing less severe if they were gonna spin this "Wayu giving…
I am really hoping they stop with the Jack and Koh nonsense soon too. It's really obnoxious at this point since both of them know Wayu isn't going there. And hell yes we needed more Pok and Tong this episode. I really missed them. But I also missed Kalae a lot. And even poor Klui, who I felt was just furniture in the beginning.
The Pha thing has periodically thrown me too. It's kind of wild to toss terminal illness into the middle of a BL that was usually just a bit lighter weight than that. But I'll defend Sab telling Wayu to go have fun by saying that Wayu can't really visit Pha right now anyway, because Pha has locked him out of visiting him. Sab was essentially telling Wayu to stop beating his head against the door and let Pha come to terms with Wayu's rejection on his own.
I get where everyone is coming from. But I feel bad for Pha and Wayu. It's not an easy situation and I worry the writing won't stand up to the gravity of the situation they've created.
If they are going to wast so many time with filler they could as well put more scenes with Jil and Yuki. I am…
I love the main couples but they could have definitely shaved some time off the KitMark drama to make room for Jill and Yuki. They're adorable. And they deserve more time on screen.
My thoughts exactly LOL.I *need* a PadbokSab moment.
There's a fight scene I've seen bits and pieces of on IG and I am 100% sure it's Padbok hitting Thanu. So we're gonna get some heat soon. I am betting it's episode 9 or 10.
i do want PadbokSab too no matter how bad Padbok is.. they r like diamond cut diamond :)
MDL isn't always correct about cast. But on IG there were hints that Padbok would return. I was worried it would be very last minute so I was VERY glad to see him pop back in 5 episodes from the end. That gives us time for some PadbokSab before the season closes!
Oh, just because everyone seems to be a Bas fan, does anyone know what he and Perth are up to? 🤔
There was some press touring with Perth and Bas. But nothing on the front in terms of acting together. I keep a close eye out. I am a huge Bas fan.
I know he and Perth are very close friends so I doubt this will be the last time they act together. Especially since I think Poj Arnon, the director of TTWILY, really liked them together.
The cast for 18 Rain isn't announced yet. We only know a few things about it. We know it's another Poj Arnon movie and that Bas is staring in it. And we know that it's a remake of an older Poj Arnon movie that's pretty damn violent. I also know that in the original promotion stills for it Copter and Kimmon were cast. But they've since pulled out of the project. So we may see Perth paired up with Bas again in 18 Rain.
Yeah I have this internal voice I imagine for Bank, the actor playing Saendee and it went along the lines of "I went from manipulating the destinies of the other characters to arts and crafts. I need to read the whole script before I sign on next time."
I don't want Saendee to start messing with people again, but I'd like to see him do SOMETHING.
I am living for the possibility of a romance springing up in the next four episodes between Padbok and Sab. It can happen. Hell in season one Kit was kissing Mark by episode 3, I think. maybe two?
Mark and Kit agreed to practice being apart, so they're both idiots, aren't they? I don't think it's just Kit's…
I feel like Mark is indeed part of the problem. Right now it looks like they're both coming at the relationship in two completely different ways that are at cross purposes.
The story-line is stupid because we still don't have some real reason behind Kit's irrational decision to try this trial separation.
I was discussing with JayDeeJay this evening that I feel like what we really could have used was some time spent giving this irrationality some substance so we understood where it was coming from.
It's not a discrepancy so much as it's the fact that the pronunciation of Jill sounds like "Jew" in Thai. So when…
The pronunciation of Jill in Thai IS with the longer "Ew" noise.
But the word "Jew", as in a person of Hebew descent, is a completely different word in Thai. Phonetically it feels a bit like ChaoYew to the ear. Which doesn't sound much like either the phonetics of Jew in English, or the names Jiu or Jill--all three of which sound very similar in Thai.
The name of the character Jill in Thai is จิล. Which actually is pronounced with a really hard "J" noise and a long, long intonation on the vowel end. So the pronunciation sounds a lot like "Che-ew". Therefore the phonetic interpretation of "Jew", while incorrect, is certainly a logical conclusion to someone who has no idea what the words "Jew" or "Jill" mean in English.
But I still feel like having missed "Jill" entirely as a conclusion, that Jiu would have been a more comfortable alternative from a Western perspective, as a phonetic interpretation. However, from a Thai language perspective, it's a LOT less sensible a choice, since Jiu (จิ่ว) and Jill (จิล) are two different words in Thai.
I almost forgot, but this episode we get Kit's surname. Sirikitisakul. He's now only one of two Gen Y characters we know the surname of, the other being Pharawee, whose surname is Praphathanakul.
I know the kiss was spoiled for next week. And at first I was annoyed, but then I realized it didn't really matter because after Wayu got a neck kiss and a forehead kiss this week, I was kind of assuming he'd get a kiss on the lips soon.
On a second rewatch of ep 8, I felt the same about most things, which is unusual. Usually I get broader feelings or new ideas with subsequent viewings.
This was an unusual episode, but I still really liked it. That being said I look forward to the fruits of the setups and hope the last 4 eps give us a good place to launch into season 3 with.
But the episode was worth it for the Thanu/Wayu and Wayu&Sab moments alone.
You speakin completely for yourself with Wayu and Thanu. They lit the whole room on fire with that last scene.…
There's nothing wrong with "no burn" either. They could have an entirely sexless romance and there would be nothing wrong with it. Asexuality needs more representation anyway. That being said, their relationship is progressing at a pace I am enjoying. Especially this week.
It's not a discrepancy so much as it's the fact that the pronunciation of Jill sounds like "Jew" in Thai. So when…
It's not odd at all. Being native in a language doesn't mean knowing how to spell words in your second language that originate in that second language.
It would be like if I, a native English speaker, learned Russian as my second language and suddenly had to spell Tchaikovsky in Cyrillic without being at all familiar with the name. I would have to guess at a phonetic spelling. It would be likely that due to differences in English vs Russian pronounciation and the difference between the Roman alphabet and Cyrillic, that I'd get something wrong when I translated the name.
Plus, subtitles are not always performed by native speakers. In the case of IQIYI, a Chinese company, it may be that subtitles are performed by a trilingual Chinese speaker for whom both Thai and English are secondary languages.
All I have to say about this episode was that it was filler, but it was still fun. I enjoyed it. Also can we please…
It's not a discrepancy so much as it's the fact that the pronunciation of Jill sounds like "Jew" in Thai. So when they say his name it's not going to sound like Jill the way we say it in English because in many Asian languages some hard consonant sounds are sublimated or even dropped from the ends of words.
That being said, the reason it's written as Jew in the eng sub is because whomever is doing those doesn't understand the literary pun of "Jack and Jill" and they are simply translating Jill phonetically. Although having missed Jill as the correct interpretation, I could have wished that rather than "Jew" they picked "Jiu" instead, as a phonetic interpretation. Though I get why they didn't.
I did this really, really long review and it was up for about 9 hours but I feel like it was more me just really wallowing in giggles over how much I really enjoyed some parts of this episode, despite the fact that it was basically just a setup for the direction of the end.
So here's my quicker take.
1) Thanu and Wayu do some really cute, really productive communication that I very much loved. And they have really nice chemistry. Chemistry is a lot of things. Foremost it's a sense of compatibility. Of connection. And Thanu/Wayu have this sort of sweet, warm chemistry in spades.
People who hate Wayu aren't going to have enjoyed this week's episode. But those who really like Thanu/Wayu and have been waiting for more momentum are in for a treat because Wayu and Thanu are all over that episode together. And I loved the bow. I know mileage varies but for me it's become an endearing "them" thing. A symbol of who they are together.
2) The metadrama was a fun way to reintroduce weaves to the plot, and I loved that we got Padbok back. I missed him! And no, I wasn't surprised when he fucked off mad. It sets the stage for him and Thanu to have meaningful confrontation soon.
3) Kit and Mark were cute again, suddenly. And after last week that really throws me. I was upset about their scenes. The only part of the episode I didn't like. I don't know. Maybe last week Kit was having some kind of crisis. But I still don't understand how he flipped back to sweet like last week didn't happen. And I don't get the trial separation. I get why they're doing it, but that reason just makes no sense. I need the writers to have built up the reason why Kit is being so irrational so that it has some cause/effect to substantiate it. Right now it feels random.
4) Pok, honey. It's very nice that your swim coach woke up. But you screwed up big time and it's going to take Tong a while to let you back in. I wouldn't, were I him. But that's love for you. And I will say I approve of NOT using texts to send an apology. That would have been one dick move too many.
I want Pok and Tong together but man, Pok has got to grow up.
5) Yuki was a goddess. Jill had wisdom and together they were quite THE power couple. I loved it.
6) Jack and Koh... dudes, stop stalking Wayu. Please? Yes apparently the whole campus knows Wayu and Thanu have been distant since Pha was hospitalized. But that's not an invitation!
7) Pha. Wow. He didn't look like he's doing well at all. They may yet kill this character off. I wasn't sure they would. But now I'm thinking they might very well do it. And I'm not sure how I feel about that. Conflicted?
8) The music editors for the drama overall are some sick, twisted people and I have to admire that level of dedicated evil. They were in rare form this episode. Upbeat montage music bleeding into Pha's health emergency, romantic music cuing too soon and spoiling plot outcomes... It was diabolical at times.
9) Wayu apparently makes an adorable elf. I did not know this was something I needed in my life. But there you go. And Thanu looks horrible in pink. Like really bad. Dun is so hot. Why did they put him in a color that makes him look a little bit unwell.
As rom-com setup episodes go, it laid the stage perfectly for the final 4 episodes. Setup eps are never the most fun but this one worked overall. Despite the Mark and Kit parts. Because it reinforced the important things. That Thanu and Wayu were still committed to each other, that Pok still has lots of feels for Tong and is poised to apologize, that Wayu could let go of helping Pha until Pha came to terms with Wayu's rejection, that Pha himself is in decline, that Kit and Mark were apparently still a thing, that Padbok was still around and yeah, still mad as fuck. So I was satisfied overall.
Someone care to explain why the production companies and cast changed for this? I was not bothered by the delay. I can always watch other Dramas. But I was confused by the reasons for the switch over.
The Pha thing has periodically thrown me too. It's kind of wild to toss terminal illness into the middle of a BL that was usually just a bit lighter weight than that. It will come out tomorrow 11:20 am EST. There's a post in the Discussion threads up above where JaydeeJay posts a direct IQIYI link every Tuesday.
You'll need VIP access to IQIYI and a VPN to watch it.
I'm actually not that into mob stories. I'm on board because of Tong Thanayut. I was glad he wasn't cut in the recast. Can't wait to see this!
