I read the novel and it provided a lot of insights into concubines and children of concubines. It’s really sad and so cruel of men who have concubines and have children with them. Children of concubines are considered illegitimate and Yang Jinglan is the son of a concubine. In his case, the main wife has 2 biological( legitimate) sons. Unless the main wife officially adopts the concubine’s son, he cannot inherit the family business or share in the assets. When the patriarch dies, the concubine’s sons has to move out of the family compound. In the novel, father and son had a loving relationship but his concubine mother is subservient to the main wife ( has to stand and serve during dinner) and dare not acknowledge him as her son to protect him from the main wife. She ‘gave’ her son to the main wife to raise and the main wife indulged him excessively to make him useless and not a threat to her biological sons. He ended up with no skills except martial arts skills. His father secretly transferred some of his personal assets to a trusted friend so that upon his death, the assets would then transfer to him so that he and his concubine mother could have a decent life. Yang Jinlan has no power ( he does not know the Crown Prince in the novel) but has excellent martial arts skills so his lack of power translated over from novel to drama. He did tell JYY in one of the episodes that he is poor. In the novel, through his smarts and bravery, he did eventually get promoted from a low level soldier . I really liked his and JYY character after I read the novel.

I’m guessing most international viewers don’t rate these dramas. Many like to binge watch after the series end

I think it’s the way she is styled. Some of her hairstyles don’t suit her and I think at times, her makeup could be better. Look at her in real life - how gorgeous she looks. Nevertheless, I think she is beautiful, just that at times, her styling could be better here. For example, in ep 27, with lighter makeup, she looks gorgeous.

This drama will succeed. According to Marcus Sims in his last Sunday’s video, this drama is number 2 out of 10 dramas for the week based on a complex set of ratings in China.

I also like the character he plays here. Though I have only watched a few of his dramas, I think his acting has improved a lot. I read somewhere that the male leads who were Seven Tan’s costars usually go on to bigger and better things. So I think this drama will do the same for him.

Right. Her family was one step from being enslaved by the Hua family and then by the Nue woman because these people want the family’s skills. And know how. It is clear from Ep 1 that the FL lead’s brother is unable to deal with the devious people and the mother is sick and in denial, thinking that if they just put their heads down, they will prevail.

I actually agree with you. Morally, ethically and socially, she is the right choice but for a trial like this, her unstable home situation almost scuttled the medical product whether it is the big shots’ involvement or not. The drama did not expand but in the Novel, when JX’added her, the team questioned her suitability due to her family situation. So that’s why I said she was almost the wrong choice but it turned out to be a good choice in the end after a lot of angst. I was also trying to emphasize that JX wasn’t a pushover. She did what she believed in.

Road Home was one Seven Tan drama I didn’t seem to like. Could be because of Jin Boran’s character and his scummy family. But whatever it was, I had to fast forward to the end and then go back to fill in the middle.

I also remember why she started XC instead of going to work for HT. It was partly to help people like that old lady who couldn’t afford a customized prosthetic leg. Unfortunately, this woman she added almost turned out to be a wrong choice.

Hey, I totally agree with you that we can watch the same drama and come away with totally different viewpoints. However, I think if you put your viewpoints out there in a public forum, , you should expect some sort of response otherwise why even comment . I respect your viewpoints and I have mine as well. As some have said, some people have been afraid of commenting in this forum because of backlash. For many months, that happened to me. Hopefully, expressing my viewpoints did not annoy you
