I don't think there as any trial with the ancestral god and xuanyi . Xuanyi rebel against the ancestral god decisions ( they didn't say what exactly) and found out about the tribulation , at the last minutes when he was about to lose that fight he use devil power( something like that ) and that was against the rules obvioulsy. Xuanyi started that fight , it's not the tribulation of chaos, if it was , The true gods would have know what the tribulation of chaos is but they didn't know until it actually happend after shanggu became chief of god

for the sword I don't really know , I watched a least 5 times (yeah haha) and didn't pay attention do this but for Mo qing losing control to his demon side , after he lock himself , there's a part where who can see him struggling to keep control of himself , when zhao yao was sitting in his room with the wheelchair dude ( sorry forget his name) and there's like an earthquake that's when he lost control, the even show him with a evil smile . When he lock himself he was already really reallyc lose to lose control that's why he lock himself , he knew it was about to happen , for the scenes where's zhao yao was about to fight him , they put that scenes as a flashback in episode 54 (if I'm not wrong) after killing the evil guy ( also forget his name) Mo qing lost control again end push her and said don't touch me , that's when she had a flashback of their fight , when she thought he died after he put he hurt himself with the sword , end he disappear for a moment and you can see Zhao yao looking for him , the same way he was looking for her when she died . The flashback end , the show her trying to calm him down and hugging him. she never sealed his demons in that fight , it was because of the sword , remember when he got her sword the ghost ( yeah I call him a ghost hahaha) said the sword can hurt the evil in him that's why he was hurt by the sword in the first place and that's why Zhao yao tried to kill him with the sword so many times. i think you misunderstood some part , xuanyi wasn't officialy chief of god, the only chief god before him was the ancestral god, the ancestral god himself created the power of chaos . xuanyi didn't became chief of god cause he knew about the tribulation , that's why he made a plan and wait until shanggu got the position , cause he knew about the sacrifice , he didn't want to do it so he waited , , tribulation of chaos , once you sacrifice there's no comeback, shanggu came back because Bai ju stop it , she never finish it , he save her soul she was able to reborn as Houchi , that's why he made a plan to take shanggu place cause if he didn't do it , saving shanggu was for nothing cause the tribulation will come back since she didn't totally sacrifice herself. Bai ju came back only because shanggu beg the ancestral god to brim him back. Ancestral god brought him back because he has soft spot for Shanggu , but he wasn't going to come back if he wasn't for shanggu begging, shanggu was litteraly the first one who sacrifice , she never finish it so it's actually Bai ju .
