This script to this show is a good example of an interesting premise executed poorly. It had so much potential.

As I can see it SO FAR, I don't think the portrayal of SY's dad as a funny character and a somewhat source of comedy in the show undermines the seriousness of situation that much. It goes to show that people, even when they're trying to be funny, or friendly, or even when they say they worry and care about you can take homophobic actions and can have a homophobic discourse.
As a 32-year-old gay man living in Latin America, I had my share of experiences with homophobia, in all shapes and sizes. I've been dealing with it for the past 20 years. From jokes and a little bit of social shunning in college to gossip and speculations in the workplace, I've seen it all. I've experienced it all.
And oftentimes, the people doing it is not the ugly, odious jerk in the room. It's that mate you group-study with in the library, it's that colleague you have lunch with in the cafeteria at work. It's that nice girl who sits right next to you at the office and asks for your help when she's on a deadline. It's our father when he cracks a joke during Sunday dinner. It's our mother when she laments we don't live a *normal* life and have a girlfriend. I gotta say, it coming from a nice person hurts just as much. Coming from a relative hurts even more.
BUT you are absolutely RIGHT to point out the possibility of them pulling a "but he only loved his son so much, he was misguided but his heart was in the right place" at the last minute. And THAT right there is where the real damage is, when they do a real DISSERVICE to the community. When real homophobic actions, be it big or microaggressions, are depicted as "misguidedly caring too much".

SPOILER (and RANT) and possible TRIGGERING

I'm sorry but NO, he didn't wait for Shi De to come back to Taiwan to start interfering and it's plain clear in EP.4 he messed up their communication via email while they were apart because he had ALREADY found out about their romance - his employee told him they were together: "Young Master seems to be in love" or something like that.
And he doesn't have to be physically abusive or violent to be considered a homophobe. Words and actions hurt just as much as fists and kicks. Shu Yi's father made it plenty clear he DOESN'T approve of their love. He said he expected Shu Yi to find a girl, marry and give him grandchildren. He admits he lied to Shi De to break them apart. He was NEVER going to let them be together no matter what Shi De did or how successful he became. Shi De understood it as such.
He went above and beyond in order to make sure Shu Yi would marry a girl and have a NORMAL life. So, if people never had their parents tell them that their way of life is not NORMAL*, or that their love is *not NORMAL because of the gender of the person they love, or that their body is not NORMAL due to the way they express their identity, and basically that they're not NORMAL as their entire existence doesn't conform to society's expectations, well these people never ever experienced how cruel homophobia can be like.

I see a lot of people around the internet saying we shouldn't be unfair to Shu Yi's father because he's not truly a homophobe. And here I have to draw a line.

You know, I didn't like Gen Y as a whole. The plot was messy and convoluted as fuck. Mark-Kit was the only redeeming quality for me, the only reason to rewatch that dumpster fire.
I hated them in the first episode but as the show went on they proved themselves to be two gems. The episode in which they go boat cruising in the river was a highlight. I wasn't expecting it to be so good.

The drunk scene in Lovely Writer is just the best. Absolutely flawless.

I also thought of the scene on Gen Y in which Kit is DRUNK and willing to have sex with Mark but then suddenly passes out. And Mark just cuddles with him while they sleep.

And I don't get this dumb obsession with tops and bottoms. Don't people know that guys can be versatile?

That's exactly my main concern now. We all know the younger brother is cold and conniving.
He basically coerced older brother to take him to beach so he could "have" him a birthday gift. WTF? So I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if this was one of his schemes.

I just hope. REALLY really hope that the situations depicted in the show keep getting discussed as wrong and that they are used to invite some criticism to such problematic tropes in BL.

Yes, they framed it as wrong. Xiao Ye was devastated by what happened. His friends also understood what he's going through is traumatic. I can't even bring myself to say so far, so good because it wasn't good at all.
My main concern is what they will do with this whole mess in the future. As for the whole "suicide attempt as redemption", well... first, it's shit! Yong Jie is a cold scheming bitch, and I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if this was another scheme.
I don't oppose to shows portraying flawed or broken characters. It's what the story makes of them that's important.
We can only hope for the best!

And no matter what some may think or say, getting a person drunk to have sex with them is wrong. It has always been and it always be.
Sexual assault can't be portrayed as an act of love! No! No! Just NO! Little stepbrother has some serious problems. It was heartbreaking to see Xiao Ye so devastated.

That whole "confession" in the apartment later on just made things worse. "Whether you like it or not"? WTF?
