For me waiting until a mid 30's episodes for them to confess and move further into their relationship is a lil mistake of the director. "Riddles stage" should have been done by episode 26/27. It would have brought more fire to those late 20's episodes and the Jiang step mother arc. They missed the mark here

Wang Xing Yue was put on the map by fall 2023 with "Scent of Time". By that time he was done shooting "The Double". I shared here video of that period when he was shooting for "The Double" and guy only had 1 or 2 fans waiting for him outside the premises = a galaxy compared to the recent videos of the shooting sets of his dramas where myriads of fans attend to see him, to give him letters and gifts. So yeah when during the 1st half of 2023 WXY popularity was not there. Scent of time put him on the map and the role of Zhang Zhe in SOTKP made him a rising young actor.

After Yanxi her career wasn't doing so good and all of her projects were failing. Her acting was criticized a lot. She had to take some time off to get guidance from Hao Lei and hone her skills. Royal Feast even it did fine numberwise did not bring the boost she needed the way "The Double" is doing now. This is literally the hottest drama of the month and the buzz around it is crazy. I am glad Yuzheng picked her and that drama is doing wonders for her and I wish her all the best because I personally think she is an interestingly charming actress.
Nope nevertheless yesterday episode we can see a dip. Probably the worst performance of the drama so far since it came on top of the Yunhe ranking. And guess what NO Duke Su during that episode ! I keep saying episode 26 to 28 could have been used to leave the "riddle stage" of the main pair - aka confession- while dealing with the step mother case. The PD missed the mark here and I am utterly surprised by the fact. And I guess I wasn't the only one feeling that.
The double still No1 on Yunhe but numbers went down quite a bit because yesterday episode no Duke Su at all ! Plus the step mother arc is honestly not interesting. It is not dramatic. Before the drama aired I hear people being concerned about the age gap. Matter or fact a lot of detractors still do calling WJY old even though I think she does not look old AT ALL ! -the comments about that matter still exist today. Then after Yanxi palace WJY had had streak of project failures and negative reviews about her acting that pushed her and take a two-break to hone her skills. WJY even known was not as hot as during Yanxi palace days . Casting her as a FL might have been risky for an investor. So no what I am saying is not dramatic. I saw it and I maintain NOBODY expected "The Double" to do as good as it is doing now.
The Double literally went from 0 on Brands advertisers to millions. A low budget production which was the drama of the last chance for its female lead whose career was on the decline and the first major work for its 21-year-old non-traffic young actor ML (when he shot this last year WXY was a nobody in the business). Sure drama had a lil bit promotion before hand still nobody could have bet its popularity would be the size of a big drama's loaded with big popular names. People were concerned about the big age gap between the main leads and even some were put off by it before airing. Now The Double is winning against all odd. No advertisers were betting on it and prefered other shows with much bigger or better "stance". Now look at this. Let's contemplate the results. The Double has been winning all odds even against negative Comments that rightfully criticized its campy appearance and illogical story-telling. Despite that the message of the drama, the convincing acting of the leads, their off the roof fiery chemistry and the rythm of the show kept people engaged to its narrative and consistently grabbed new fans days after days. There is only one thing that can make a campy cheap show wins = Love. That being said I would like to conclude by saying, for me "The Double" is to the year of Dragon what "An Ancient Love Song" (the latter being better but it is ok) was to year of Rabbit. Both underestimated projects filled with love and Ironically both aired in the month of June.
