i saw some comments on another forum stating that they thought this drama should be rated r due to the frequency and type of cursing. just to let people know, some of the words that were translated into english as curse words on viki were not actually curse words in korean. some of the words and sounds that were translated have multiple implied meanings depending on the context of the conversation. sometimes sounds that are similar to pfft, sighs, tongue clicking get translated into english curse words depending on the platform. i think some of the translations were done to show more frustration or different implied meanings, but they weren’t actual curse words. there was one translation where the person said in korean, “oh really” with a tongue clicking noise and deep inhaling to show frustration, and it was translated in english as “god damn it. geez shit.” so just be aware that not all translations are completely accurate or literal, and some are done to exaggerate or to help convey the feeling more intensely. i’ve noticed this on other dramas also not just this one.

is there a reason why lou ji tong is allowed to have a personal servant while in the palace and niao niao does not? is nn allowed to bring her personal servant, lian fang, and/or one of her mom’s female guards from home and chooses not too? also it frustrates me that zisheng didn’t have somebody secretly protecting and/or watching nn while in the palace especially since he knows how awful some of those people can be.
i’m only on episode 1, but it’s nice to see them opening up about their feelings, their reasons for being there, things that others said, etc. most people in life have struggles even if they don’t show it or talk about it.
i’m finding it hard to get into this drama. it’s too similar to ashes of love so far. maybe if they had a different actress playing yan dan or had yang zi playing a different character.

i’ve seen many people get upset about niao niao’s mom’s speech when she is putting her down in front of the emperor and other people. it seems like she was doing that to protect her though. if the proposal had come from an unsavory character like a prince who was known for sexually assaulting maids or something similar and the parent chose to protect their daughter like that then i doubt people would have the same reaction. pretty sure i’ve seen it happen in other dramas, and i don’t recall people complaining about it then. in fact they were glad that the parent protected their child even though they were putting them down. sure the proposal came from a lby here, but the thought is similar…to protect her daughter. maybe it’s because people don’t like nn’s mom for her previous actions and it’s just adding on to it… just something to think about… are these double standards?
i think they should extend that 40 episode rule to 50 or even 45. while it might not be a huge difference for some dramas, it could help with continuity, clarification, flow, etc of some dramas. this drama being one of those that having just a couple of extra episodes would have helped with the continuity and flow of it. you can figure out what is going on without those scenes, but you can also tell that some scenes were cut out and how they made them work instead.
