When moon light chicken was announced, earth mix had just broken through to the A-list. But now a year and a half later, we have legitimately six prestige BL actors all in this one series. We are going to look back at this lineup in the equivalent way we might look back if say in 2020 there was a new series featuring Tay/New, Mew/Gulf and Off/Gun. I’m assuming people feel the same as I do that even though we’re not complete their first series as I write this, fourth and Gemini are a already heavy hitters in the BIL ecosystem Whatever that proverbial. “ it” is, those two most definitely have “”it.” and are in the same league as the other four actors even if not as much experience under their belt
I asked myself: Do I really want to watch another high school BL? A Thai one at that (Thai comedy and I do not…
"fitting songs' and "characters grow" are spot on main ways the show get a great and not just good stamp from me. It's funny. Most of us are willing to live with really mediocre BL content because the genre is so specific, and producers likely make more money via monetized YouTube, licensing to subscription services or trying to generate their own patreon revenue if they just stick to what works. So, we get locked into a sort of passable normal. And clearly, there's a market for shows that are filler between NC scenes or the kind that are heart flutteringly and plotlessly cute where nothing happens. And there are some really sold BL's that check a few boxes but fall short of best-of-all-time league. My Only 12% or Love Mechanics shore up the good not great examples. . Really well done, solidly acted, even a good story or such a well worn plot.. Some are really terrible - like Bite Me, Ai Long Nai,, That's My Candy, the Second Season of What the Duck. ....but even that's pretty rare. Some are super ambitious but fall short of the high level they were shooting for. Til the World Ends was that for me. Don't get me wrong, a noble effort. But every once in a while, and I count maybe two every year, where you know you are getting a show where the talent just pours out of the TV screen. I love it when it happens. For me, Triage, A Thousand Stars, Ep 5 of Bad Buddy, Semantic Error and I Told Sunset About You , Eternal Summer, Cherry Magic, Teddy Bear Miracle come to mind off the top of my head I honestly think School President is close to the level of Sunset from an artistic perspective. Sorry I know I'm rambling. I just know how special this is and I'm trying to get all admiration out while the show is still hot.
How's Eternal Yesterday? I've been very interested to start it but for some reason I've been procrastinating a…
It's not for everyone, but it's one of my absolute favorites. It won't pull a Make Our Days Count on you because it basically puts billboards up in your brain from episode 1 that advertise, "sad ending" MODC threw an epic curveball at the audience and basically bait and switched into something else entirely in its final episode (which I happened to love, but I'm definitely the minority and understand how jarring it was for many people). Here there are no surprises, though if you decide to watch it, watch the wardrobe in the show's final scene and ending credits....I'd argue it's actually a happy ending in a way. Bu I digress..and sorry for TMI'ing you. Shalmali, if your BL rules are strict: heart-fluttering and light and fluffy only, maybe you skip Eternal Yesterday.. However, if you look at BL more as an artistic medium when it's at its very best and accept that the really well made ones grab you by the heart and fill you full of intense emotions , even when you know the story is fictional the first place...Think about the talent it takes to pull that off. -- fictional people I want in my life..even if its only for an hour a week and ones I actually miss a lot when it's all over.
Mike, it is not just you. I am the same way except I do enjoy HS BLs if well done. I like Love Sick and MIR, but…
Oh,RP that's great to know. I have no US based BL fan friends. Even my gay friends say "Beeee What" when I mention the genre to them. I will definitely join. It would be great to see not only more fans from the states but American BL emerge as a genre. We could sure use some of the soft power it could deliver culturally considering the totally dumb political environment of intolerance that seems to have swept across the across the nation. "Don't say gay" ..my ass!. It's hard to fathom how far more conservative nations like South Korea are so much more comfortable with the idea of hypothetical world where coming out is an anathema. And of course, gay men and women are the side couple in the BLd world ...straight women are the main leads , and they would embrace BL they way they'e embraced Boy Bands in the past. Count me in and thanks.

Oh P’aof! The director of Thousand Stars, right? That explains why I cry laugh and get so touched by MSP. It hits me like the villagers did in that far way land.

Well said and agree. Did you see that Taiwanese BL over the summer About Youth. That’s another that felt very authentic and was in great hands as far production craft goes. Given how beaten down the school bl genre is, it’s an accomplishment to deliver anything memorable. MSP hit the jackpot in terms of the talent on camera and behind I mean those two kids are 18. They have talent. And a director that pulled seasoned performances out of those kids

I hope I didn’t oversell it. But you sound as jaded as I am about tropes and bad execution. Then every once in a while something comes along. T -047s music in second chance the series or the direction snd cinematography in You’re My Sky …that gives the school BL trope it a nudge above standard fare. Those shows each had flaws and this one is better. And MSP is “good” like that for the first four eps. Then it jumps to great in 5 in my opinion
Coincidentally, MSP and BBS delivered it in ep. 5 in both instances!
So funny. I just dropped a comment about that on YouTube. For completely different reasons but this was the Ohm Nanon episisode that turned Bad Buddy from Good to Great
This is the only Thai series I'm extremely happy to see a guitar or a microphone come out ong, LIKE THE WHOLE…
Yes. 99 out of 100 times it would be a cringey cheese alert, but on this show, when the mic come out, it works. The whole show gust works. And gold was struck casting those two actors.
Ok. I’m here for a sanity check. I’m the most jaded and cynical BL watcher. From making up BL Sponge Bath Drinking games to seeing how long i can hold my breath without lapsing into a coma during “Bite Me” dialogue pauses, I show no mercy when it comes to badly executed BL shows, so it surprises me to no end that I’m about to gush about ep 5 of My School President. But wow, I madly respect the artistry of this show. A school BL show. Where I thought nothing could surprise me. But ep 5 took this show from good to great. I need someone to call BS on me. Am I just infatuated withe the MLs?
That music video sequence near the end of the ep would normally be the apex of cringe if inserted randomly in 99 out of 100 BL series , but it really worked in this show. The musical sequence was a bookend to an earlier comedy routine about each character having to decide withe the help of a jaded and cynical guidance counselor about selling out or following their dream in life. It was great really funny opening opening scene, and an escape from what usually passes as funny on these types of shows. Free of any bing and boing sound effects too. And in between those bookends, we are treated to competent writing and plot development, amazing acting from two eighteen year olds and expert directing and pacing. A school BL that feels totally fresh and constantly puts a smile on my face. We are only half way through and maybe I’ve lost my objectivity, but this little series has really surprised me. In my opinion it’s punching above it’s weight class. And for different reasons, tonight’s episode 5 was on par with the ep of bad Buddy that delivered Ohm and Nanon’s epic episode finale first kiss.
I’m really really surprised that THiS of all shows is the one that consistently puts a smile on my face and makes me really happy for an hour each week. Like Eternal Yesterday made me shed tears in tribute to its greatness, this little gem is having an equal and opposite effect as I grin in tribute to how well done it is.
For those deciding not to watch this one, I respect your choice. The world is sad enough. However, if you decide to give it a try, it just might help you make sense of all the grief and sadness life brings and make you appreciate more those fleeting moments of joy. Hopefully, if you do watch, you'll be treated to a series that is the absolute epitome of how great storytelling can elevate the BL genre to truly epic heights. Eternal Yesterday was my " number 1" for 2022.
People like to use those words lately, how is he a groomer or pedo? Some bl fans are annoying.
Thanks for that rant. First, the whole grooming over reaction to "I Will Knock You" isn't worth addressing because these characters are presented as peer aged with no power dynamic - The tutor not in a position of authority nor the aggressor. (if anything I supposed what's "toxic" is the knife wielding gang leader forcing the tutor to do its bidding. But you won't hear me making that argument.) We need toxicity in BL's...or maybe it's better put, we shouldn't shy away from topics that involve toxic characters or situations that make us uncomfortable. It's though artistic expression that change happens. Male - Male relationship normalization represented in these shows has likely done more to improve tolerance around the globe than we really even know. Here is the US, at a time when the extreme right wing is making a lot of anti gay noise and gay night clubs are getting shot up, our Senate actually passed a law codifying gay marriage where it's legal. Given the backdrop, it's remarkable. To those of us who've been subject to intolerance , harassment and (in my case) violence, I appreciate that the BL movement has contributed to that rising tolerance world wide (long way go, but progress is huge) . And yes, I understand that BL is a not gay genre and it's supposedly for straight women...but here we are I'm tankful to these shows. But,( JPNY thanks for allowing my sub-rant, and Inusike sorry to be a squatter ..just one more point). Dramas need conflict , and conflict is often driven by toxic ..... every day, like cheating , domestic violence, bullying,. trafficking, abuse, sexual harrassment.....discrimination, h, etc. . I hate to see times when artistic expression get punished or intimidated because a pocket of viewers didn't want that subject matter in their show.. Great shows come from writers, directors, and other crafts people that want to tell great stories, and those often come from the world around them or "ripped from the headlines" Great stories perpetuate great acting.. Take the ending of Make Our Days Count: there was a such a backlash against that show because the creators made an artistic choice. I'd argue. if you go back and rewatch the finale, it was one of the greatest dramatic achievements in BL story telling. Yet i know there was a movement to "cancel" the writers and showrunners. Great art causes a catharsis - strong emotional reactions and it's important to story telling. I've notice more shows that successful ly avoid toxicity by avoiding having a plot altogether. As a result of nothing going on, we either get BL plot on repeat "Fahlunruk" where the same exact things happen every week, Or AiLongNai, which has been 12 episodes of looking gorgeous and acting adorably cute...oh wait,...they threw in in a last minute scandalous parents plot because there's nothing going on in the series. That's my issue - intimidating artists out of making a creative choice that could make a show great because you don't want others to get exposed to it is almost as bad a government censoring because it thinks it knows best. Now, obviously, some of these programs target teenagers, and different rules apply there. And I do agree that creators have a responsibility if a show is obviously targeting underage viewers. I'm more referring to cancel culture in entertainment for grown ups. Ok, my soap box just turned to flakes. I'm done. Thanks again
Episode 2& 3 and cat are everywhere, I’m loving it.. it’s like they are part of the aesthetic. They naturally…
Thank you. "Oddly Refreshing" the perfect way to describe it. I'm getting or I'm going to get EVERY last possible B/L trope and cliche imaginable along with a predictable enemies to lovers story line. So, why do I freakin' love this show?. "Self, you make no sense", I say. " Every series, you make me play a drinking game with you, Self, to predict which episode the BL sponge bath scene is going to happen, and whether it will be a fever-reducing BL sponge bath, a clean up drunk vomit/food spillage sponge bath. After "Bite Me" and "Check In", haven't you learned your lesson about oddly refreshing starts?!" (And I though for sure ep 2 was going to deliver on the BLSB...damn!) Self says he thinks the show stole our heart was when Noey strapped on his red shirt and bow tie and broke out into his 1930's confession song about soul mates. We hope "I Will Knock You" buries itself way down in the quirk and stays "oddly refreshing" the entire way...

I missed the suppository thing but on rewatch I see what you mean. I wonder if Mame got burned by a lover that turned out to be gay and this is her deviant way of getting pissed
