This was about the best BL I’ve ever watched. It has a greater level of maturity than most any Thai series,…
Well said. I loved this show.

I totally agree with you. My heart soared during the final 2 episodes.

Great observations. I’m 10 in. I won’t spoil. But I walked away very happy with the way this series ended.
On The Eighth Sense Apr 26, 2023
Having seen all ten episodes of “the Eighth Sense” I can emphatically say that for me, it was the best series of the 80 or so BLs I’ve watched since 2016. Everyone’s different but for me nothing beats this one. Well done. What an achievement. I didn’t think anything could beat “I Told Sunset About You” but this one is right up there in its class , and that is by no means casting shade on that Thai masterpiece. The difference is that this show made the side characters as three dimensional as the two leads. And all were sensational. And the filming quality, casual and authentic vibe was as good as it gets for this type of story.

Me too! I don't want it to end and I secretly hope for an open-ended finale so they'll make another season. That might disappoint a lot of people, though. Hey, I'm curious, since you've rewatched, what's your opinion of the chance meeting on the subway early in the show? At first, I remember being a little critical of the Sr. character's hot/cold on/off switch. Still, now that we better understand that he's struggling with deep seeded trauma and the guilt of mixing the attraction to his junior and his love for his deceased brother, the earlier eps make a lot more sense. Did you pick anything up in the rewatch? (I'm waiting until all eight eps are in the can, then I'm going to binge it). Any this show rises to a level that few if any BL dramas have ever gotten close to IMO.

happy ending?
You will find out the ending of the show in the first few minutes of the series. How it ends is for once not really the point of this show, You can decide quickly whether you want to handle the rest of the series. Personally, it made my list of all time favorite BL’s ever.

Sunset is the top of the Thai stack. Based on the kind of show I think you’d like, the afore mentioned Moonlight Chicken is worth a try. It’s a departure from the typical No slide whistles and cowbells. More mature themes and real BL world problems. It’s on YouTube. It features six of GMMTVs most talented actors and their best director. Since it’s a “Midnight Series” it deviates away from that network’s usual teenage target audience. Only 8 eps.

For me the biggest sign when a show is bad, is when people are defending its bad(ness) by using the source material.…
Agreed. The “But if only” source material argument is tiresome. The Last Of Us is proof that it’s possible to recombine elements that made it really enjoyable as a game into a linear passive viewing experience. “ But if only”, I got to pick which weapon I could bludgeon the child molester with in the series version like I can in the game…

A rock fell on the plot and the story dies. So yeah
On Duty after School: Part 2 Apr 24, 2023
No spoilers but vague reference to plot elements in the finale ahead

This is probably a little snowflakey coming someone in the US, a country that’s essentially made blood sport out of massacring children at school, but to me the producers of Duty” ran out of ideas and lost control of the story line. Kitchen sinking every possible gratuitously violent thing they could think of in place of a well thought out ending is no different than the members of Congress here. They’ve run out ways to spin their failure to act in response to all the violence. They don’t t even try any more
And that’s the feeling I get from the show runners here. No plan. Just get us to season 2.

Yeah I’m writing this 20 minutes before the last ep wraps up, so I may be setting myself up for being called a dumb ass. (Ok, even more of a dumbass than usual) But that’s how convinced I am this show went off the rails

but they managed to pack mass shoutings , premeditated murder, mental health struggles, sexual violence “it was all a dream”, and other nonsense most not earned by the story telling and without advancing advancing the main story at all

Honestly, I hope I get hammered here for premature review ejaculation Nothing would please me more than to see the show save itself with a brilliant ending. But “Why are they here” “what do the want”. “ Would the eat a salad instead of us”. “ Where do they come from. “. Or “is there anything we can do to make them stop randomly eating us?” So far 1 hour in and nothing.

I’m going to watch just to see what they pull out of their ass and how they cliffhang the audience”

“All of Us Are Dead”. Let this serve as a warning please have a story. The surgeon general says a plot that goes up in smoke is harmful to your health.

I do get that the last episode makes the point that it’s not the aliens who are villains We are our own worst enemy. But the show started out that way And evolved to this without earning that path

There is another show airing called The Eighth Sense that weaves a love story narrative around mental health struggles It far better executed the blended premise. Here imo we got two different shows

Japanese bls are another breed. They are on a league of their own.
I agree with that. Producers there seem to set the competitive bar for other countries and help influence the more hard hitting, real everyday life issues that Japan never steers clear of. Moonlight Chicken in Thailand seemed was a real departure from the style of show usually offered. (I’m not talking about source material more cinema verite stlyle’) And while the Eighth Sense is a thing totally unto itself, owing some of its stylistic influence to Western Europe’s “Skam”, I still think Life Love on the Line or His helped pave the way for that show.

Seriously, Jero, do you have a patreon link or buy me a coffee? I've been looking everywhere to watch the complete edition. LMK cuz that's huge solid you are doing for fans of this show. I can't tell you how many times I've rewatched the first episode of the original version on Viki. I'm honestly hard pressed to see what's different on EP 1 here. Other than maybe a couple of music cues are are different. like maybe the first hallway scene in the high school. PS.

I can’t argue that protracted “is he or isn’t he dead” was manipulative and out of character with the rest of the story. It brought the story down to tropeville. No need for me to reiterate my pov about the rest. I’ll leave it there. I’m just glad there’s a story that can provoke some difference of opinion. That isn’t ai long Nai where nothing happens

As far as Shoulder to Cry On goes. I’m right there with. You. That show ended cowardly to me and used the mental illness as a plot device. The Eighth Sense earned these eps because the writers set up the trauma carefully. It was very true to my experience dealing with a severely depressed mentally ill “asshole”. That is how they roll. I respect your opinion and if I thought this story was a pure romance, I’d be hitting the heart in agreement. We’ll see how it ends but to me this story is about mental growth for one character and mental struggle for the other. The romance may not be the point. Let’s hope both characters find inner peace in the end. A cheesy ending where one lead cures” the other would be a cop out

This drama is complex, well paced, well acted and extremely well written. The more episodes I watch, the greater it gets. Masterpiece is overused word but this one is earning it.
