He genuinely can't win against these people because no matter what decision he makes they're going to distort it against him. He was also holding out hope that Nine isn't malicious and just dislikes him, so I think this scene really made it sink since Nine was done pretending.

What I find the most confusing is that Time doesn't really hate or dislike Renji. It's like he tries appear angry at times (like when they were on set), but I feel like if they weren't on good terms like secret feelings or relationship there would be a lot more hostility rather than just yearning. I think it's more that Renji doesn't care about pretending to dislike Time or acting like they don't know each other which is why he keeps flirting and Time lets him.

You know what, I'm actually loving this Wan progression. It’d feel too fickle for him to suddenly hate Nine overnight, but him peeling that Nine's a terrible person layer by layer and everything slowly clicking is so effective. Now he will never doubt the kind of person Nine is and he will realize how deceptive he was, his full capability. He'll never feel conflicted that he passed judgement too early. Sometimes, we really have to see someone balantly do shitty things for everything to make sense.
Even the pool scene was different because he'd have to believe Nine is capable of hurting someone over something petty. And since he was underwater, he didn't have the outside perspective of what Nine was doing. It was people's words against who he believes Nine is and what Nine portrays himself to be.
It's not just stubbornness over him liking Nine or delusion, but the realization that not everyone is as sincere and morally good. At some point when you enter adulthood, there's a scary realization that we could be interacting with people capable of terrible things and we'll never know because we're too trusting and they never show their true colors at first.
Wan met Nine as a person before Nine was a celebrity which re-enforced Nine's image to Wan. How can someone who came across as so sweet without fame and power, who presents himself to be good all the time suddenly be capable of such terrible actions? and over popularity? I love that they're taking time to show the internal conflict. The way Wan is slowly becoming aware of that Nine is intentionally making him miserable and him reconciling that Nine is being unreasonable with all his criticisms of Wan.
