I am still in ep 17. So i don't really get it about you were saying emperor vs PDF stuff. What do u mean emperor rely on slaves and criminals for his eunuchs? Also, it's clear already that PDF didn't force his adopted children to castrated themselves. Even Zhuang Shiyang still have ability to produce children, it means he is still the "full grown man". His head almost got chopped in ep 13, because of his wife confession about the shortcut hidden road to PDF residence, but he passed the inspection about dicks earlier with no problem. So originally The Double was designed for sad ending. In the beginning, Yu Zheng (The Producer) didn't expect The Double will become super BIG, so initially he wanted to make artistic ending with memorable sad ending. But it turned out many people loved The Double and it became a super hits in that time, so he decided to cut the real ending and asked Wu Jin Yan and Wang Xing Yue to film the extra happy ending episode to please the CP fans. Basically he was afraid many CP fans will attack him because of sad ending. That's why you can clearly see the difference between quality of main episodes vs fast food extra episode.

The bonus episode was shot in RUSH hour. I heard they filmed it around one week before final eps of The Double. They even didn't have time to dub Wu Jin Yan with the same voice actress in The Double. If you hear XFF voice in extra episode, you will hear the different voices between XFF main episodes (voice actress) vs XFF extra episode (Wu Jin Yan real voice).

It's understable though if we see how picky she is about dramas. But i think it's still great. 2 gold mines rating is already GOOD.

The Double is clearly open ending. We can intrepret the scenes when Duke Su come back after the battle as Afterlife scenes. It was too dreamy and unreal. There is XFF with red dress and the big tree they planted together (it will takes dozen of years to become that BIG). Xiao Heng ride the horse with red clothes and we can't see his face. It's ambiguous and open ended. I can say that Xiao Heng died in the battle and his spirit finally come to her when she died in her waiting. Finally, they are together in "other world".

The extra happy ending in the special ep was the fan service for CP fans from producer. It was a sudden decision because Yu Zheng was afraid of CP fans attacks.

Wang Xing Yue team also accidentally released the hidden scenes about Xiao Heng death in weibo. The Dai General slaughtered Duke Su throat and the blood splashed to everywhere, especially from his mouth. And he died in the battle. I saw it in twitter/X already. As far as I know, they shot the battle scenes (including Duke Su death) for 7 days but they decided to cut it in the middle when XH was looking at the sky with jade in his mouth.

So, they decided to cut the real ending and give us open ending instead to please both sides (sad ending and happy ending) + bonus special happy ending for CP fans.

So, it's clearly open ending for The Double. You intrepreted them as happy ending, I intrepreted them as sad ending because I already knew about the hidden facts behind the scenes already. Fair enough.

LLTG is not as darker as this one. It's still very different except some certain tropes.

For me, it's a sad ending. There is a "different meaning" why they placed FYX in the left side. They also didn't explain about the cure of poison further in the end. So, it's not simply about the balance IMO. But I think the ending is very clever. They wanna give us an open ending with so many options. I think it's more like a sad ending but they disguised it as happy ending. Because we saw all the "people" there! I can't even differentiate between reality vs illusions/dream in the fireworks scenes.

Yeah it's kinda open ending or it depends on viewers intrepretation (like The Double). But actually that last scene is a soft hint of sad ending.
