I thought the premise of pondering the plot is to thoroughly understand the background and personality characteristics of the characters. Who is Xue Yao? A general, essentially a soldier too. The mission of a soldier: military orders are like mountains, defending the home and the country.
Even if The Sleepless Princess is a sweet lovey dovey drama, you can't break away from this most basic character setting. Even if Xue Yao seems to be a retired general who has been dismissed from the military and returned from the battle field, in the years of his military career, this type of behavior has been accumulated habits and characteristics has grown in him. It cannot be completely overturned by a single sentence of "because of love". And reinvented.
There are people scolding Xue Yao, and hope he suffer because he don't treasure Chu Yue like how Prince Shun did (I have a lengthy essay to write about him later). It seems correct to scold him because audience think that he did not care about Chu Yue. He used Chu Yue. After all, the conflicts between the two also due to they are not on the same thinking channel /mode, which leads to gaps and obstacles in emotional communication, so that the other party is deliberately hurting each other. In the end, once the emotions are up, the reason will go away, leading to intensification of contradictions. Putting this kind of scene on ordinary people, it is logical to substitute into the perspective of women.
However, under the assumption that the other party is a soldier and bears the burden of his family and country, it seems to me that there is almost no legitimacy to judge him by the word scumbag. The vocation of a soldier determines that he will inevitably sacrifice himself for the sake of his family and the burden, not only his emotions, his family, and even his life. I don't understand people who scold General. He tried to save both Prince and Princess, he has to sacrifice himself and his reputation (his family and ancestors died for battling with Xi zhao), he fights for Nan Sang people, he has to Wed Naxi because the king and Nan Sang people rely on him. He took the burden and responsibility to maintain the good relationship between two kingdoms. He's the one that uses strategies at war and trying to save everyone. He has his loyalty to his kingdom, his family and the people he loves. Male lead is a human being, not just a tool for people to see all the 100% lovey dovey moments.
I really like Zheng Ye Cheng, but the scripts he gets for his last few dramas are really not very good:In Love…
Erm, because he’s a solo actor without signing any entertainment company to back him up? - An Oriental Odyssey seems like a drama to promote SML and FL, his character was dropped off by another actor initially due to limited screen time and terrible role, thus they offered the role to him with high salary (he need to pay off his Contract termination lawsuit debt so he took the offer?) - Royal Nirvana is a good drama but his character is about rebellion and against the king so half of his scenes got deleted (China has controversial issue with Hong Kong youth rebellious- sensitive issues at that time). He has no luck, unfortunately. - Love of Thousand Years, the entire team, from film director to production team, are all newbies. There are 7 scriptwriters in total, some brought by different casts personally except For him, which is why only his scenes are following the novel plot/original scripts while the rest are a bit off.
He has limited choices but that’s what he could choose from a bunch of offers provided to him. His role got snatched and this is common when he’s a Lone Ranger. At least he’s slowly doing better by improving his acting skills and own dubbed voice. Somehow, the drama he involved can be bad but he portrayed all the characters with his efforts and wholeheartedly. He is serious and professional at work. I’ll give compliments to The Sleepless Princess, they have the shortest production time compared to 95% Cdramas but managed to deliver the quality.

We'll see if he will tells CY the story of him and NX, which I doubt he will. That's his character, he's being consistent with his own character. Last time after argument, CY misunderstood he was having 'fun' with a woman brought by his followers in the tent, he then explained to her - I have no relationship with that woman, I didn't do anything wrong/morally betray you, and I've only explain ONCE. This is exactly how he behave, he told CY, I have nothing to do with her, don't trust her. From his perspective, he has explained once and that's his limit. And here we go, girls need double triple assurance, so I understand when audience blame ML because he should at least tells FL the entire story of him and NX (girl's perspective) vs I've explained and summarised the important points. My CY do no need to worry my loyalty to her and please stay away from that cunning woman (boy's perspective) Again, scriptwriter write the plot and actor/actress acted out what they could, if you read the novel content released by scriptwriter, the character are even worse and thankfully the casts and director make things smoothly.

That's how the scriptwriters create conflicts. Audience are watching the drama from the point of view as a God. Didn't ML asked FL not to trust NX at the beginning because she has no good intention? He said multiple times, stay away from NX and threatened NX to leave CY alone. Didn't ML said both of them don't owe NX any debts? Didn't ML said the ankle band is for slaves in Xi Zhao and wanted to take off from FL like, twice but FL treated it as their love gifts. ML's character makes him stay firmly on his stand, he don't think NX worth his time to explain anything to Princess because he definitely has no feeling and he sees her as a cunning woman who is willing to do dirty works just to meet her goals. CY js too gullible and trusted NX, which acted stupidly for some scenes, I can say she's lack of confidence when the love opponent mentally brainwashed her. If you watch episode 3, General and Princess used to have a conversation: if soldiers can no longer smell the blood, they are dead, there's a flashback in general memories where he was holding male soldier but in NX's version of story, General is holding her. Also general doesn't allow his soldiers to rape or bully the vulnerable group. NX has been making up story by adding lots of descriptions and metaphors, she managed to play feelings with CY. The moment CY confronted ML before he chase assassin, that's out of her character too, she was too blinded with the truth and acted recklessly. Therefore I said she needs time to clear off her mind and think rationally. Thank goodness we have Mr. Bai to explained everything. Same for ML, he got the information that his brother loves the same woman + unintentionally died because of the fire incident which caused by FL. This happens in less than one day, give the ML some time to process the information. He's always out of mind and have no idea what to do when it comes to love relationship and his brother. He's in conflicts and dilemma, he needs to calm himself. I understand from both characters why they acted this way. The ML sure put on blame but it won't take long time for him to figure out its actually nothing to do with FL, he just need some time. Audience too, are blaming him the moment after they watch ep28, it is a true reflection of what happened in the drama, that's the most honest reaction and emotion poured out. I was, angry at FL previously and ML later on, but I am able to process the information then stay calm. Now, I feel for both of them, they deserve everything and they will understand each other. This is not the usual or typical rom com drama, this is something that actually happens in real life, real couples. People who are single, in a relationship or married who watch this drama will have different perspectives, I would say, this drama, they have successfully to create so much fuss and discussion /argument.
Xue Mu's death is definitely suspect. However, that does not begin to justify the shitty behavior from Xue Yao!…
You need to stay calm.. Give general some time to accept the information that he received. He need to process the information that the woman he loves is the woman his brother loves + unintentionally causes his brother to die in that fire incident. If he continues to marry FL on the same day, there's something wrong with his character. Spare him some time, don't you feel audience being so harsh to ML? FL can always go to her brother but when ML mentioned about his brother, people get mad easily? His brother died, his beloved family member passed away, I'll give him time to settle his own emotion and feelings first.

If you watch 2nd time, you will realise there's absolutely no issue with ML but FL just need some time to clear up her mind. Same for ep 28 where ML needs time. I still think this drama is better than 80% of the same genre dramas compared to others. At least 1st 20 ep are superb. They have roughly 5 filler episodes but this is acceptable considering they only have 70 days for post-production. We are being too strict because they set up high expectations in the beginning
For me, the more scenes where general appears, it is not draggy at all. 21-24 people might think it is draggy but that's how it lead to 25-28 which gave audience a total ride of roller coaster.

He also told her, he will do the same thing in order to lure the assassin because there's no point waiting for assassin to come after her, he will take the initiative to defeat them first by using tactic.

It's okay if you don't like it, no one will force you to watch it. Episode 8 is one of the best episode, with every little details, the leads did great job in acting. If you don't like it, don't continue.
