He didn't have a choice about the bet. I'm forgetting the circumstance but the emperor forced him. It was mainly too to root out remaining evil.

Sidenote, I've been so obsessed with this show. So much so that I made my first two-ish video edits for Duke Su and Jiang Li, and Jiang Li and YSJ.

I just realized that the emojis on the calendar represent events happening for the crazy princess. So the broken heart probably signifies an unhappy ending for her.

The court is super divided and there are a bunch of different fractions. The princess has the backing of another prince who has a large military and is planning to revolt. So the emperor doesn't want to upset her too much so that he can keep things in balance while having Duke Su/himself try to solve the problems within the court 1 by 1. That's a short summary of it at least.
So in short, she can do whatever she wants because of who is backing her. Idk what route they will take in the show though but I'm assuming it will be the same.
