Not so sure - check director she is popular and award winning one. She is also smart she hide all mystery and supernatural elements from the trailer and concentrated on romance that - most Bl watchers prefer.
She also won awards for screenwriting so she won't put up with GMMTV just to get her name smeared.

I watched ToL when it was first airing and it was also my first drama with Gun and Off - so I was not in the slightest interested in who they were beyond their roles. They also weren't paired for that long at that point.. You might be right that "unrequited love itself is powerful to feel the emotions and angst" but switching universes and waking up in another person's body is also damn good starting point.

Just to be sure I rechecked plot line of TOL ep. 3 and it still have the some structure and similarities how author unfold the plot.
Third being in love in Khai / Thaley wanting to go back to his universe (main plotpoint)
Third moving in with Khai / Thaley looking for portkey ( one of main subplot)
Third having drama with Kain gf in episode 3 and Khai, resolved in the same episode/ Thaley and Peaun whole scenario plot point
first semi-romantic intersection - also the same

There is many similarities to plot overall structure, just reception is different due to actors ability to bring us in plot and portraying emotions

Also point when their courtship started... after Peun decided to live Tun best live and read his diary. I can bet that Tun definitely wrote about his unrequited love for Tess in his diary - so does it mean that Puen hit on Taley/Tess to grand Tun wishes?
