Just to correct you— it's not produced by Netflix. Only distributed by them. Plus, I don't mean offence but…
LMFAO. I didn't even realize it was being distributed by NetFlix until I read this comment. I knew it was jTBC from other sites. I didn't even pay attention to that because I know the difference between NetFlix produced vs distribution of a Korean broadcast channel production. Since I knew it was jTBC producing it, that wasn't even part of my thought process. I merely used NetFlix & Viki as EXAMPLES of productions where the English translations are much more nuanced and correct. Just take any NetFlix K-Drama and switch between subtitles of "CC" vs simply "English"...then switch to audio "English"... and you can see the differences. I know enough Korean to know most of those are not direct translations of Korean words and phrasings... there's much more nuance being used to convey a bit more of the sentiment going there.
And I don't take offence. You have a right to feel that, even though you think it isn't the best, you're not as bothered by it as me. For me, having taken Korean at a Korean American Culture Center in SoCal USA, I'd expect them to correct me if I didn't speak just so... and they do, for certain. It's respect of your viewership to not insult their intelligence. ...Like, I don't want to have to suspend my logic that a character knows English well...it takes me out of the immersion of a drama... and so, my 'rant' is about the fact that, even before this drama airs, I'm already being taken out of the 'realness' of the concept of this drama as portrayed in the synopsis.
Okay, I don't get it. I know there are a lot of comments about this but I still feel like adding my 2 cents in. Because, let's be honest, shall we, if a production is this sloppy before the show has even aired, then my expectations go down to the gutter.
The above synopsis is from Soompi = owned by Viki, Inc. with offices in both San Francisco & Seoul. Now, as the leaders in Korean to English translations and subtitles, they fully understand how the "space" or "lounge", Sa Rang currently works at, should actually be titled then decided to make the CORRECTION themselves. "...King of the Land is a VVIP business lounge.." SEE?!? They actually put in the preposition "of" meaning "belonging to somebody/something" as in the "King" belongings to the "Land". The Viki translators speak/write English WELL.
Every other outlet, including the Korean version of Wikipedia, or Korean based English database Hancinema [run by foreigners] have this dang drama's title as the PURE translation of the romanization of " 킹더랜드" which is 'Kingdeolaendeu" as "King 'the' Land". But is that even the correct translation of the romanization??? Are we even sure the phonetic Konglish translation to English is "King 'the' Land" and not "Kingdom Land"? Because an upscale VVIP lounge for an upscale hotel that accommodates foreigners, assumed by the simple fact that they bother using a Konglish name for their VVIP lounge, should appropriately name the room as to not insult the intelligence of its members.
Yes, Soompi made the corrections right on the translations if, in fact, the 더 [deo] is meant to mean 'the'. If the writer generated this title and the production indulged them, this writer is definitely not sophisticated enough for the plot's theme and/or setting. Merely using Konglish as a way to make something sound/seem more important is childish thinking in the era of 2023.
This feels more like a 1998 title than the current age of K-Dramas produced by NetFlix. It reminds me of when I was attending Utsunomiya Kita High School in Utsunomiya, Japan. When we'd go to a movie and/or shopping down at the city mall, there were ALL these articles of clothing -- shirts, t-shirts, sweatshirts, dresses -- that would have these RANDOM English sentences or phrases that made ABSOLUTELY no sense whatsoever. It was just gibberish put on a shirt to look "cool" because it was English. POINT BEING: Japanese, at that time [circa 1985-86] thought it made you look 'intelligent' just to have English on your clothes, as in, onlookers would say, "WOW! He/she knows English!!" Bwhahaha... I thought it was ridiculous and childish... This is what this title feels like to me. It's so dated and childish. Production should have been savvy enough to make the corrections to the lounge the drama is named for just like Soompi did. The fact they didn't, sadly, I must say, makes me think poorly of them. They have to know that this is insulting to English speakers, just like putting in actors/actresses whose characters supposedly went to university in a English speaking area then come back and cannot speak a lick of English. Or putting in foreign actors who don't speak English, etc. Imagine Song Joong Ki playing a half Italian then not being able to speak Italian at all??? That's what makes Joong Ki such a treasure as an actor-- you take the time to get it RIGHT and not insult the intelligence of your audience.
Takeru just posted a video of his wrap for this drama on his YouTube channel with the message in English: " 'Why Didn't I Tell You a Million Times?' is now out on NetFlix!! "
Trying to understand the headline. Not sure where Kim Woo Bin has showed nervousness. If anything, the stills show him to be determined and focused. I mean, the description of his character doesn't indicate anything like this. If anything, it states he's the one who is enraged, not Song Seung Heon: "...5-8, is a legend among deliverymen for his strength and ability to complete his tasks without fail. But hiding behind his cool, sarcastic demeanor is a lot of rage—and only a select few know why..." If anyone is nervous, that would be Sa-Wol, while being trained by 5-8. 5-8 can be brutal and stoically badass when protecting the citizens, especially the refugees, from Cheonmyeong Group. That requires very little time to be 'nervous'.
Ryu Seok is cruelly ambitious, and wants to win at all costs. That's not due to rage. That's due to power, wealth, and privilege and the friction with his father.
Also, I think this is a better description of what this drama will be about: "..After a meteor crash lands into Earth and destroys everything in its path, the atmosphere is changed irrepareably. Oxygen grew scarce due to extreme air pollution, forcing people to wear masks and rely on deliveries of the precious resource in order to survive. Deliverymen, as the name suggests, deliver oxygen and other necessities that keep people alive. And for many, becoming a deliveryman is their only hope of lifting themselves out of poverty."
On another note, Song Seung Heon barely looks like himself. I haven't seen him in an evil role in a while. They really put a lot of effort for him to look the part.
This is already starting to garner international attention. After the success of 'Squid Games', this has the potential to be a huge hit, if it was done right. Honestly think that this can skyrocket Kim Woo Bin & Song Seung Heon into international stardom--past their stardom on the peninsula -- or merely Asian in general. This is the genre of movie/drama the West loves. Just look at the success of 'Everything Everywhere All at Once'. This drama can possibly tap into that kind of success. I'm excited to see the outcome. Additionally, Kang Yoo Seok can get a huge spring in his acting cred as well, among the other casts...barring an epic fail, that I just don't see happening...
Still don't understand how fucking a prostitute becomes crime. When was sex never a transaction? America that…
Well if we're talking about the culture of legal prostitution, why does everyone always bring up the USA, and talk about it as if we say it's the standard???
Was his 3 month hiatus for 'health reasons' at the end of 2019 to early 2020 a precursor and a warning sign. We will never know because the company and South Korean public at large try to hide this epidemic under the carpet. But there are so many of these 'sudden deaths' it's like trying to cover the sky with your hand. In the meantime, are they getting proper mental health access? Any extra support from the family, friends, & fans that care about them? I want to believe Fantagio was there to help, but in the back of my mind, the results prove it's simply not enough.
Okay so sending you abroad without your consent is okay?
They act like parents of some religious cult where they control every aspect of their offspring, by what they can do for a living, who they can have as friends, who they can marry, when and where they can go, what hobbies they can have, what they can eat, what socio-political thoughts they can have, etc. The family is a full matriarchy where the dad is emasculated and has no power. He doesn't have thoughts of his own either, despite his love for his daughter. He lies and hides things from his wife because he knows that often she is wrong and controlling. The obsessed persons in this drama are Zhu Yun's mother and Gao Jian Hong.
Let's also make a point-- it may be a cultural thing, but even then, it's kinda of mentally and emotionally abusive and sick -- Zhu Yun isn't a TEENAGER in need of her parent's constant supervision. She was a college student and literally the definition of an adult. I have a 25 & 22 year old son. My 22 year old will be graduating college in June. Do you know, that in the USA, as a parent financially supporting him, I have no right to open his mail, check his bank account for how he spends his money, or to even demand his doctor discuss with me what's going on with him??? I LEGALLY HAVE NO RIGHT TO DO THAT. Why??? Because in THIS country, the minute you turn 18, regardless of if you live at home and your parents pay your way, you are an adult with FULL RIGHTS and PRIVACY to make decisions for yourself. He gets to vote in our national elections as well. He's not a baby. He's an adult. He can come and go as he wants, and I have NO LEGAL authority to force him to do or go anywhere he doesn't want to go.. Try calling the cops over forcing your kid to travel abroad against their will at 22 and see how far that will go! The fact that in China you can do it speaks more to the political form of their government and their family laws towards young adults than it does about whether Zhu Yun is a girl obsessively in love with some dude--regardless of how he looks and such.
So, no, I don't see her mother, who was controlling Zhu Yun's EVERY move and decision--- including being a programmer that put her in a position to meet a guy she didn't like -- BEFORE she meet any dude she didn't like. Her mother ALWAYS wanted her to go abroad '..to improve..' herself. That was her MOTHER'S choices... ALL OF THEM... not her daughter. Her daughter never had the right or authority to make a decision for herself whatsoever, from childhood into adulthood. Her mother was literally trying to create a Stepford Wife out of her daughter, wanting Zhu Yun to be a little robot who did only the commands her mom inputted and never question her mother ever. This mother is lucky that Zhu Yun was respectful as a child and took this behavior in stride... but at some point, if she's going to live her own life, and have her own thoughts and feelings, she has to cut ties...because this obsessive, controlling mother is never going to let go....
Whether Li Xin and her relationship was the right thing to make her realize she has to break free from her mother, I don't know...and I don't care. But, if making decisions for yourself AS AN ADULT is considered obsessive and disrespectful to your parents, than just about every adult on the face of the planet is... She's not a child anymore. So, I'm not into this idea of Parent/Children concept you're going for... This isn't a High School Drama....Kids need to grow up and be their own person, and that includes making choices and decisions that might be mistakes and/or might go against the views of their parents. That's LIFE.
If you watch the NetFlix docuseries about the FLDS [The Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints] this is so similar in many ways. Old men marrying multiple girls, swapping them between each other, and then going as far as marrying them at 14 and having babies with them. What is an even harder pill to swallow is that there are still members following this stuff.
Scary to see women who are so ignorant, conned, & scammed for love/money/promises to be subservient to men. I'm not blaming them. They're usually brought up from infancy to be susceptible to this. It's just scary how easy it is for these guys to do this shit...when the guys are usually old/ugly, and majority of these girls, right off, have a GUT instinct that what they're being spoon feed is BS. All these men need to be in jail....
Claiming to be a prophet or God is beyond the pale. There is nothing in scripture that says any such thing...and for Christians into 'Doomsday' crap...the second coming is happening through Christ Himself, not some 3rd Party human trying to have sex with multiple women...Jesus wasn't having sex with women, so why would they think a prophet would need to do something like that???
It would be nice if folks who moved to a religion actually READ the dogma and text from the MAIN source, not secondary material, and also not having someone EXPLAIN/INTERPRET it for them!! If any of these women just merely read the bible & directly what Jesus said, they'd be no where near these phonies.
Why would Canada voids his dual citizenship? Dual citizenship is legal in Canada.
Are you saying the CCP has lost cases even on appeal? Are we being this dense? Detaining someone to shut them up so you can get your conviction? This is the CCP we're talking about. The have a 100% conviction rate, just like Xi got voted to be in his position essentially for life with a 100% vote for him. Come back to me when Kris Wu has served LESS than the time they handed him. Until then, remember this isn't a Canadian courtroom or any other Western courtroom. This is a CCP run courtroom.
Holy crap there's a LOT of misinformation being promoted in the comments.
I've posted a few clarifications but past that, I'm not wasting my time. If you're getting your news from online Kpop promoting rag magazines, take everything with a grain of salt.
I'm here for the larger picture. I feel bad that Yoo Ah In got embroiled in this but, let's be clear, this situation is much bigger than him and much of it has to do with a change in politics within South Korea. Let me explain....
Under President Moo Jae In, a lot of the drug investigative decisions were stripped from the prosecutors office and left to police departments in general. If any followed the Seungri & the Burning Sun scandal, you know how corrupt most police departments in the richer areas of Seoul can be. This left a large swath of drug cases not properly investigated.
With the change of leadership, South Korea recently reintroduced legislation that put the investigative process back into the hands of prosecutors. What you are seeing now is a result of this situation, and Yoo Ah In isn't being singled out or targeted. It's just that he's a public figure without a huge backing support that can keep his name & face out of the media, like the others. What do I mean by this?
Even before the issue with Yoo Ah In, prosecutors have indicted a ~17 people group of chaebols for marijuana growing and distribution in the country. They are heirs to Namyang Dairy Products, KIS Wire, JB Financial Group, & Hyosung. All of these guys have studied abroad & likely enjoyed the relaxed attitudes regarding drugs, but hooked, kept up their substance abuse in Korea, even setting up a growing farm inside a tangerine farm in Jeju Island. This was from a sting set up back in September, 2022 that completed in January, 2023.
Prosecutors are back to hardcore investigating and prosecuting regarding drugs in general. Yoo Ah In was caught up in a wider propofol investigation within the Gangnam area done around the same time. There were more than 50 people being investigated for illegal use. During the investigation, and it isn't clear whether Yoo Ah In provided any relevant information, that his doctor who proscribed the propofol has been arrested and indications are that he is a propofol abuser himself. Unfortunately, news media are also reporting stuff coming out for Kpop rags who somehow know that this 'doctor' is one of Yoo Ah In's BFFs...a matter that's unverifiable to me... what we do know is that prosecutors have indicated that Yoo Ah In is cooperating with them and they aren't currently seeking his arrest,
So, around SEA & Asia proper, there are changing attitudes towards marijuana which is medically legal in a few nations but most of these countries aren't anywhere near legalizing it for recreational use. In general, drugs are frowned upon in practically every Asian nation, especially for recreational purposes. Like it or not, those nations would rather the only abused substances be alcohol, as it is never possible for a government to 100% control the behavior and attitudes of its citizens. Forced labor camps & 're-education' systems where they beat you senseless aside. It's still not possible. Take the issue of Thailand decriminalizing cannabis recently. Afterward, the govt was forced to issue rules regarding 20 & younger because there were a slew of 16/17 hospitalized for marijuana overdoses. It is what it is....
Yes, we can all agree there should be a happy medium, and folks with emotional and mental issues need more support so that they don't turn to drugs as a way to cope that it becomes abusive. But that's for the citizens or government of each particular nation to decide. But, this is the overall view of why these kinds of topics are starting to rise up again.
The WHO is set to classify Covid like the flu and emergency will be lifted. I went to my own OB/GYN yesterday, in SoCal, USA, who said, here, Covid will be declassified as an emergency threat and be treated as a 'cold' starting this April, 2023. No more vaccines, masks, etc required. We're moving on...but the mental health damage of the past three years of societies being lockdown across the globe have had a huge impact, especially as it relates to drug abuse. As we all try to get back to normal, we need to proceed with love and care for those who have struggled with this whole thing the most, not demonize them. The government and its agencies have a job to do. We must understand that. But as a community, we can be the ones to be supportive instead of antagonistic, and seek healing rather than punishing MORE than the laws provide.
[Edit: Btw some are decrying the ban to leave the country. Uhm, in a criminal investigation, this is standard practice. And FYI, some of those chaebols left the country before their ban was issued and are now on a "wanted list". So, it's just part and parcel of what investigators do under these circumstances, whether Yoo Ah In is a flight risk or not. It means nothing other than, yes, indeed, this IS a criminal investigation that involves him and cops expect to have to arrest him at some point in time, even if prosecutors have decided NOT to do it at present.]
KBS has temporarily banned him until the final results are in. He is not permanently banned so if proven innocent…
Hmm. The results of his hair and blood have been in for a while. He tested positive for propofol, marijuana, cocaine, & ketamine. He is currently cooperating with police who are furthering their investigation at the moment & investigators have indicated they're cool with him and don't have any intention to arrest him at the moment.
Okay, but scratch all that, I read that he's been missing for a while, I really hope that he's okay and they don't…
That's just hype. He's not missing. He just didn't attend the search & seizure of his homes and police say they are investigating him in absentia. The Kpop rags all said this just because they were pissed because he didn't allow them to take perp walk photos. The standard news media who talk with investigators said he was cooperating with them and they currently have made no decision to arrest him.
It will be interesting to see how much better the OTP are since both have had a lot more experience and, at least, both their last 2 dramas, especially in the aspect of romance, has been a huge improvement from where they were when they did S2.
That is what happens when you get caught using drugs in Korea. It is a shame, as he didn't hurt anyone by him…
Media is just hyping it up. They searched the Itaewon house that was in that 'I Live Alone' reality TV & another apt. He hasn't been to the Itaewon house for ~3 yrs. I mean, he let everyone know where he lives IRL, you think he can continue to stay there??? lol. He probably agreed to do it cuz he was gonna move from there anyway. Also, neither place required him to be 'present' at the time the warrants were served. The police are investigating him 'in absentia'.
As it stands, the govt has already issued a ban for him to leave the country so he's not going anywhere. The only thing I fear is him 'offing' himself, in the meantime. Otherwise, he's scheduled to appear before the prosecutor later today... meaning sometime March 14th. His agency already confirmed this. It's not like he's gonna go out in public and expose himself to a bunch of perp walk pictures, if he doesn't have to do it. =/
[Edit -- Here's an actual NEWS report NOT a Kpop tabloid print ~~ https://en.yna.co.kr/view/AEN20230313004000315 ~~ No where in this article does it say he is missing. They literally said, "...Police plan to have Yoo appear for questioning behind closed doors, and a request for an arrest warrant is not being considered, the officials said....."
So, even now, with all the scandal out in the press, and the evidence they supposedly have, the cops aren't even interested in arresting him yet. ]
Ahhhh okay... I see... So you saw that the drama officially received its CCP broadcast license and it's set to be released. It's just Youku needs to find a time slot on its platform for it.
Then... That's that.. We just have to wait for Youku to set the schedule. Maybe you can all go to their online social media sites and hit them up constantly directly, that way they know how fans are waiting for its release....
Good job!!
[Edit: One thing that's been stated is that Youku clearly will not release at the same time popular dramas that are similar genre. Right now, online, they're really promoting 'The Starry Love' and that is scheduled to finish airing on Mar. 11th. Also, on Datawin Popularity Index this drama is ranked #6 for 'dramas to be aired'. ]
I'm wondering if production postponed the drama out of respect for one of the cast members who died on Feb. 27th. He's family held his funeral ceremony on the 5th of March. Maybe out of respect they decide to wait for that to release the drama. ...then again, he's just a supporting cast member so maybe Youku production don't really care and they're doing it due to censorship reasons.
And I don't take offence. You have a right to feel that, even though you think it isn't the best, you're not as bothered by it as me.
One can never know.....
