Omg, i didn't know they were dating, so its really unexpected! One of my fave men is gonna marry soon... Congratulations…
They admitted to dating back in 2021. Seems they were dating for a while before that, and his old agency outed their relationship in retaliation for him deciding to start his own agency, which forced him to resign with them as management because of all the anti backlash.

I'm so happy he has flown in the face of all the manipulation and negativity, and found his life's happiness.

For me Korean is even harder than what you're describing. It's definitely harder than Japanese that still tends to use the same phonetic structure of the English consonant/vowel system. And don't get me started on the batchim grammar rules. I often have to use an online Korean pronunciation converter. Even Koreans have a hard time with those rules.

I also tend to look up Wiktionary in an effort to get more concise translations as well as using my Minjung's Essence Korean-English; English-Korean dictionaries. They're comparable to my most beloved Kenkyusha's Lighthouse Japanese/English dictionaries! I think with both Japanese & Korean, verb conjugation is the most important to learn off the bat because it includes both formal and casual versions. 😊

Naver has an online dictionary that's fairly decent. I use some good apps as well: The Korean Learner's Dictionary & 3 others that are provided by the The Korean American Center near me that has been designated as an official ROK sponsored international learning facilitate as a King Sejong Institute. 😉

Idioms are the bane of any foreign language learner.

Even with English you can have some that might not translate well:
1. I'm going Cold Turkey.
2. Are you wet behind the ears?
3. Hold your horses!
4. Did you get someone's goat?
5. You better get your ducks in a row.
6. My, he's an eager beaver.
7. He bit the dust.
8. Elvis has left the building...
9. This is such a cock and bull story.
10. They're thick as thieves... etc etc
😁

I didn't know Empress Ki was a action drama... but okay...

and your comment about musicians is true...many artists have become irrelevant after changing up their style. The fans that were attracted to their style of music in the first place enjoyed it for that...sometimes a change in genre works, sometimes it doesn't...but I guarantee you are not gonna have fans of Metallica listen to an album they put out that is based on pop or country. That's simply not how it works...and that doesn't mean that the Metalheads weren't TRUE FANS of the band in the OG [original] form.... I think you're talking about obsession with someone...there's a difference.

Unfortunately, without a better translator, this is how it translates from Korean to English. Not sure if you're ethnically Asian or not. I'm assuming you are from Canada...but if you're familiar with Asian languages [ I took 4 years of Japanese in high school, went to a high school in Japan for 6 months, and took 12 units of Japanese at UCLA + studied to level 2 Korean at the Korean American Cultural Center in Irvine, CA ] you know that much of the languages use inferences vs English. Using pronouns is rare, and titles are key. On top of that, much of it is 'flowery' verbiage with lots of idioms vs the more blunt and direct style of English or other European languages. Thus, direct translations are always hard to come by, and the translations are ALWAYS up to the interpretation of the listener or translator based on the CONTEXT of the conversation. Additionally, idioms don't always directly translate because it's based in cultural ethos.

So, yes, when production doesn't necessarily have a solid script but a vague idea of what the scriptwriter plans to initiate, it'll be more flowery interpretation that might not directly translate the actual full concept of the plot...it is what it is...I at least thought this description gave a much clearer idea of what to expect...that's all....

Read the comment. It's pretty clear where I copy+pasta it from... don't come at me like I wrote it.. but I think it makes a whole lot more sense than the actual released synopsis of the drama. Obviously it will involve some Slice of Life with Cho Yong Pil's sisters and neighbors with likely comedy aspects since his character is portrayed as being a half-wit. Since Mado is a 'fantasy' world that doesn't exist in reality, those characters will express the type of community Mado is and how they're living....

Sorry whoever wrote it offended you...lol.

I can absolutely criticize something I started watching but dropped. I don't have to subject myself to the entirety of drama I don't like to prove that, indeed, it wasn't worth watching for me....

And please not where I said the opinions are "SUBJECTIVE". Everyone has their own personal likes and dislikes. You're to quick to jump at me with your own subjective opinions. It takes more than chemistry to pull a drama off. My dislike was over the quality of the script which I didn't like. What I didn't watch was because it was a script I wasn't interested in watching.

I'm going to finalize this by saying exactly what I said above, and repeat it hopefully in a way it sinks in rather than criticize me for my own personal taste that just doesn't happen to match yours:

***The reason I haven't watched or liked the majority of the stuff JCW has been in since he left the military are for TWO reasons: 1) 20% is the acting isn't what I expected; 2) 80% is the drama scripts are not the same type and quality of what I watched JCW in previously.***

It's his choice of scripts I find lacking... If you like them, good for you. I'm sure there's an audience for it... but the rest of us who say he hasn't picked good dramas to be in are not that audience... When he comes back to the kinds of scripts that had us like him in the first place, then we'll all be happy...

man I don't understand the hate for jcw every single drama you guys hate on him every single time every single…
I don't think this is quite true at all. I think I've read quite a lot of the negative sentiment and, frankly, I've agreed with it for the most part. Let me explain....

The first time I knew JCW existed he played an awesome half-wit in 'Empress Ki' that turned me into a fan. I rated this drama 9/10. The next drama of his I watched was the follow up 'Healer' which floored me again. I rated that a 10/10.

Then he did K2 where I just loved his character for the most part. When he wasn't playing alongside Yoon Ah, it was awesome. Yoon Ah's acting in that drama was stale as old bread. I don't know why she continues to get lead roles, I was gonna watch both 'The King in Love' & 'Big Mouth' but I couldn't stomach her acting. Sorry, not sorry. ANYWAY... Although I rated K2 7.5/10 due to the messy romance aspect I didn't enjoy at all... I STILL thought JCW's acting was stellar!! If they had taken Go Anna out of the plot and just had Choi Yoo Jin and Jeha, that would have been lit!! JCW had more chemistry with Song Yoon Ah than his main co-star. The scenes with these 2 were lit af as far as I'm concerned. Some of the best K-drama acting I've seen!

Unlike others, I actually enjoyed 'Suspicious Partner' and rated it 8/10. This was just before he went into military service. And this is where everything goes down hill. I don't know what happened to him but he hasn't really picked 1 good drama since then. The plot of 'Melting Me Softly' didn't interest me so I didn't watch it. I love both Kim Yoo Jung & JCW but I couldn't stomach 'Backstreet Rookie' and its plot so I dropped it. Same with 'Lovestruck in the City', and I LOVE Kim Ji Won and her acting as well. None of his other dramas from 2020 to now have been a plot I'm interested in watching.... so....

Everything I loved about watching JCW from the start seemed to vanish after he finished his military service... He just hasn't really picked a script comparable to his earlier ones, be it modern, or historical... I just think he is capable of so much more and better, that it's a big disappointment. I know a lot of fans feel about the same way... It's just our subjective opinions and a LOT is based upon the stuff we enjoy watching... It's not personal or 'hate'. We aren't ANTIS ffs. We're fans who want to see the old badass JCW in action, nothing more, nothing less.

Sports Trends news and other sources said, Shin Hye Sun has not confirmed it but JCW practically has. barring something unforeseen. Her side only admitted to receiving the offer but nothing more.

This is a 'Healing Romance' genre actually, but if Shin Hye Sun does take this it won't be out until around the second half of this year since she already has a drama scheduled with tvN 'See You in My 19th Life', also airing through NetFlix.

Not sure why, but Han Kyeong Entertainment 'Ten Asia Report Kim Ji Won' essentially said she's accepted the part of Sam-dal. They go on to state, 'her character who constantly dates to try to find her other half, returns to her hometown after breaking up with her boyfriend'.

OSEN stated precisely, "...an official from IOK Company, Shin Hye-sun's agency, told OSEN, "We are preparing 'Wax Queen' first as our next project. Nothing has been decided after that, so it seems premature to say anything about it. Regarding the appearance in 'Welcome to Samdali', we are currently discussing. It's just in progress, nothing has been decided." SO...that's a SECOND project she has in the works for THIS year before she'll even consider this project... So, I think this might be overhyping her...someone seems to be trying to pressure her to take the job through the press.

From an anonymous unofficial source, the further details are:
Characters:
1) Male Lead: Cho Yong Pil is the fool of the Mado Meteorological Administration
2) Female Lead: Cho Eun Hye looks fragile but has a strong personality; Sam-Dal is always falling in love trying to find her other half but ends up breaking up with her current boyfriend and returns to her hometown

Plot: [in addition to the vague plot production as released which is as stated above]
'Welcome to Samdali' is also based on the imaginary island of Mado with Jeju as its motif. It is about a woman from Mado who returns to her hometown and meets her first love. Through the daily lives of his sisters and neighbors who do not lose their laughter in all kinds of storms, the island village's characteristics will be preserved throughout.

It's is categorized as a "Human; Healing; Romance".

You know, you can go on YouTube and watch lawyers, like #LawyerYouKnow breakdown a murder case that's currently going on in Florida, USA. Why am I bringing this up? Because I cannot stand this new trend with Millennials & Gen Zers. Your generations have taken cancel culture and social media to a new level. You all are about gossip...when you know very little about #FACTS. This is why I watch YT channels like 'Emily D Baker' breakdown pop culture legal scandals. She straight up says, "...we talk about FACTS, not fuckery..."

The case I'm referring to is Courtney Clenney and her ex-b/f Christian Toby Obumseli. He ended up dead by the knife in her hands. Had he been arrested for domestic violence before? Yes. Had she been arrested for domestic violence before? Yes. She claims she stabbed him in self defense. The DA begs to differ and she is currently on trial for second-degree murder with a deadly weapon.

For those looking at this very TOXIC couple, without evidence and FACTS would automatically side with the female. Courtney's words are holy to feminists. But then there was CCTV footage from an elevator, and what was going on in it??? Courtney was beating the crap out of Christian while he tried to hold her back, never once retaliated towards her. Had he beaten her up before? No doubt! He was arrested for it. But Courtney beat him up just as much. This was a TOXIC relationship between both of them.... and it escalated and escalated because, as a female, she more often than not got away with doing harm to him than he did with her. So she kept upping the ante until she "FUCKED AROUND AND FOUND OUT"...now he is dead...and she's fighting for a life outside a prison cell.

I really don't give a shit about the fan fueled drama here. One sided evidence on either side is sus because, don't kid yourselves, a lot of it could be doctored. What is true is that any toxic relationship needs to end. Also, the drama doesn't need to be force fed by the fans posting up facts and figures. This is not a court of law. Lives have been ruined by going public with this shit instead of getting therapy, private help, legal advise, and/or just ending the situation/relationship. Fans do nothing by making this shit about them instead of the couple involved. Allowing them to air their toxic relationship in the media is just freaking sick, and mere colleagues and co-workers have to live through their toxic relationship with them, because fans don't understand 1 thing; THIS IS AN "A" & "B" CONVERSATION, "C" YOURSELVES OUT OF IT!!

I had this drama still on my PTW list...but coming here and seeing the fan's Shark Tank and the obvious feeding frenzy it whips up makes the whole shit distasteful. I'm not watching it now... that's it... Next....

I don't recall any news about SJK & SHK ever living together before they got married, no? Anyway, they were dating…
There are more than enough articles stating that he was introduced to her right after Vicenzo finished airing which was May, 2021. She moved to South Korea in spring of 2022 to live with him. You think he met her and just invited her to live with him out of no where and she left the UK to do that barely knowing him? Be realistic here...

And if what his movie co-stars are saying to the press are true, and they've actually known each other 3 yrs, that's still no where close to being involved with his relationship to SHK let alone cheating on her. Their relationship started in Descendents Feb~April, 2016, married July, 2017, divorced July 2019. Three years ago, to be exact would be January, 2020. That would mean he had 6 months to lick his wounds from a divorce to start looking around and dating. People were even 'shipping' him with co-stars in 'Arthdal Chronicles' which started coming out around the same time his divorce was announced...But regardless...that's saying he's known her that long, not that they've been dating...as far as what's been reported in the press, it started middle of 2021...

It's a shotgun marriage. No baby. No marriage.
NO. I didn't...and it's extremely rude for you to say that, because the very definition of "SHOTGUN" comes from concept that the 'FATHER OF THE BRIDE' is FORCING the groom to marry at the end of a "SHOTGUN", thus, NO feelings, NO planning...

Etymology: "From the implication that the groom was forced to the altar by shotgun-wielding relatives of the bride..."

So, excuse me if I don't accept your insult to them OR TO ME that I or my husband, or SJK and his bride were being FORCED into a marriage because we got pregnant.....

Not taking anyone side rather SJK or SHK but everyone needs to look at both sides no one really knows what really…
I don't recall any news about SJK & SHK ever living together before they got married, no? Anyway, they were dating and didn't bother to announce anything about it until they actually got engaged. SJK & SHK had barely known each other personally for a year, let alone dating when they announced their marriage.

Timeline of him letting us know Katy's the one:

1) News is he met her abroad AFTER 'Vincenzo' finished [2021] but his cast members from 'Ro Ki Wan' are singing like birds to the press stating he told them he's known her for ~3yrs, which with covid seems hard to imagine, unless he had a 'Zoom' relationship with her prior to meeting her in person.
2) They dated while traveling together abroad.
3) He asked her to move in with him in South Korea and she's been here since Spring of this year.
4) He mentions his love for her on Sept. 29 during a speech at APAN Daesang awards.
5) She gets pregnant the end of October since she is currently 3 months pregnant.
6) He openly takes her to a press conference for 'Reborn Rich' in Singapore, Dec. 7th and introduces her to production. He takes her to several friend's weddings, one in Bali and others in Korea.
7) Mid-December a K-netizen posts and gets lamblasted for saying they saw both of them at an OB-GYN clinic together.
8) Through his agency, SJK confirms his relationship to Katy, Dec. 26th, and his agency denies the pregnancy rumors.
9) SJK announces that he's already married and she's pregnant on January, 30, 2023.

So, point here, is that, he is confirmed to have dated her ~1 year before he asked her to move in with him. Then they've been living together for ~1 year in South Korea. So, I don't see how this is fast. Isn't this like the average time span that most relationships go to marriage? Most people don't need to dated 4-5 yrs to get married unless they're nervous about it. SJK has always expressed a desire to be married and have a family. It's there in his released statement as well.
Replying to gottikan Jan 31, 2023
exactly, and he is marrying a foreigner, so, the audience SHOULD be harsher with him, guess if you are pretty…
Wait wut???
There are reasons for the difference.

**Seo Jang Hoon had filed complaints against a lot of people who said he was getting divorced, less than a year before it happened. Netizens had a problem with his attitude, not merely the fact he got divorced.

**Lee Hye Young filed a lawsuit against Lee Sangmin for fraud, cheating, and a bunch of other stuff. He ended up going to prison for operating an illegal gambling website.

SJK's divorce was lowkey and amicable. Neither trashed each other in the press. They're both considered good and decent people who just had a difference in lifestyles that lead to their divorce. Why would they be harsher on SJK than these others for that???

sad he is getting married because of the baby, we all know people outside south korea uses birth control to stop…
Yes... that's why his statement "...Naturally, we both dreamed of making a happy family. We've put in a lot of effort to keep our promises to each other.." has much more meaning than I think most commenters are understanding. I think it has gone over everyone's head. He has wanted to start a family, not merely be married. He brought her to South Korea to live with him, as she has for over a year now. It's painfully obvious that this Westerner, and SJK wanted to start a family...so, it's not sad, because he's getting married and having a kid because that's what he "..put in a lot of effort.." to do. lol.
Replying to OneAjhussi Jan 31, 2023
It's a shotgun marriage. No baby. No marriage.
Except for this comment by SJK:

"..Naturally, we both dreamed of making a happy family. We've put in a lot of effort to keep our promises to each other..." as well as all the other translations of this phrase which essentially confirms the he brought her to live with him in South Korea, which she's been doing for over a year now, with the intention of starting a family...and "put a lot of effort" has more connotations than... '..OOPS.. I knocked you up so I guess we will get married..' AND she's Western so getting married simply because you're pregnant, if she wasn't sure or didn't essentially have the inclination to get married in the first place, she wouldn't be bringing her folks over here to support her through the process and getting married, period.

Since SJK said it this way, we must take it at face value...How do you know they weren't planning a wedding and such when this happened??? The Chinese media infiltrated his first wedding, even with drones. It was a fiasco! Do you REALLY think he wants to do THAT again, along with the kind of scrutiny he will get for marrying a European woman??? How do you know he wasn't hiding it? SJK said they've been "..putting a lot of effort.." into 'MAKING' a family. Those are his words... so, yes...it's NOT a shotgun wedding in my estimation...due to experience....

Because by your estimation, me and my husband had a "shotgun" wedding on Labor Day September, 1997, after living together for 5 years, because I got pregnant. Except I was already engaged, bought my wedding dress, and was set to get married the following March, 1998. I had my son in January, 1998, and, even though my husband said he didn't care if we got married after his birth, I wanted to get married beforehand, so we had to up the plans and have it done in a few months, rather than the original schedule... I'm sorry...but I do NOT consider my wedding to be "SHOTGUN", only a timing change...because I would have been married regardless....that's far from "...no baby...no marriage..." Just saying....

Asian countries have bigger abortion rates than in Europe or the USA. Almost 9 times more. The mom probably decided…
I don't know where you get your information from, but even before the new laws went into effect the percentage rate of abortions has gone down and is currently under 10% as of 2017 -- 4.8% to be specific.

Here's a Yonhap News article from 2019 discussing the rates:

Here's a statistical data chart that's been compiled from 1961 to 2022:

And to further clarify that the rates are down to 4.8 since 2017, here's the stats from 'statista' website:

Maybe the information you're getting are from abortion advocates who were trying to exaggerate the rates to push for legalization laws. But, ROK's abortion rates haven't been above 30% since early 2000s...FYI.

I went to high school in at Utsunomiya Kita high school, and I worked for All Nippon Airways as a aerospace parts buyer. I'm well aware of Japanese attitudes.

As for SJK's parents... I don't think they'll interfere this time around. His father popped off far too much last time and got slammed in the press for it and had to do a lot of apologizing on his son's behalf. By Korean standards it's not. They've been living together at his place for over a year now. In Korea, that's basically being married...he just hadn't add her to the family register yet...with a kid, that necessity became apparent.
