Often we focus way too much on the offender and forget about the wellbeing of the victim. Hopefully the girl is healing from that trauma and will get the support she needs. As for the actor, I hope the justice system will let him pay for his crime. As for us, let’s not add to the confusion and hate.
Personally, I didn’t like all three dramas and stopped them at various stages in their run. I can stick through a drama even though it has faults (like Misty a JBTC drama) but I couldn’t finish any of these. I thought the characters and their interactions ridiculous in the first, got tired of the circular plot of the second, and was not impressed with the unrealistic and shallow plot of the third. I get the reasons for the hype of DOTS but I can’t see anything remarkable about the production.
The ratings of cable dramas are relative to those of the main three and the percentage of the market over time. Nowadays, cable dramas are getting greater market share. And JBTC dramas are not usually flops as a general rule. Take, for example, Heartless City, Secret Love Affair, A Wife’s Credentials, etc. Suzy’s acting has improved but I don’t think she is one of the strengths of the drama. So even if people thought it would flop because of her it doesn’t mean she made it the blockbuster (how meaningful is this term?). And, I don’t know about the KBS story, but actors will turn down roles for many reasons (eg. a role might not suit them, busy schedule) and not because they anticipated a drama to be a flop.
Hi Irusu. Just wondering if you could make the distinction, in your next article, with OST (Original Soundtrack) as being the collection of music for drama/film. I noticed from the comments that people are calling individual songs OSTs. Your article gives that impressions since you said that your fave OSTs are the three songs. This is a great topic btw. As you can see from my comments, I’ve been here three times today.
To speak honestly, as a Jamaican born, I don’t know how I feel about the reggae vibes in Dream. The way the reggae groove and island sound is only used at the intro and chorus and toned down during the verses leads me to speculate that the artist only used it as sample for a hook/accompaniment to the particular words and doesn't get the genre itself. I understand the blending of music genres but it doesn’t feel like this is the case here. Whenever I hear music with roots from the black community that is meant as consumer product for Koreans - who have little appreciation for or understanding of the history and intention of the music, it does turn me off.
personally Misty's OST painful love was amazing it had a 90's feel to it, and my mister OST both Adult by sondia…
I just listen to this. I didn’t take note of it during the drama but now I remember the feelings it evoked. You are totally right about the 90’s feel and it’s beautiful!
It’s literally been 5 years since I’ve really enjoyed a song from an OST. My faves have got to be Adult (My Mister), Monochrome (Miracle We Met), and Love Destiny and Oh My Love (Buppe Saniwaat). I can’t believe there are this many and the year isn’t half over.
Sorry y’all who are going to hate me for this post but I had to ask: did anyone else not like this story as much as I didn’t? I feel like part of the fault is that the nuances of the dialogue are lost in google translator. But seriously, I had such a hard time with the plot and up to now (ep5) I still can predict the next scene and mouth the next line before it’s spoken. The actors play characters I’ve seen before and ones they themselves have played before. The chemistry between the leads is non existent and so I can’t really understand why they are in love so bad. The whole production also feels like an echo of 10 miles when listening to the voice actors and observing the scenery. And, God forbid, I find William Chan and Cecelia Liu overated. I’m particularly frustrated. Anyone feeling me?
Well thinked, some dramas reflex this tension, tension which exist in every society, but in Korea the capitalism…
Not sure I understand completely what you have written. I do agree that the show does bring up the tensions of current Korean society. Like youth suicide, which it seems both Jian and Gwangil contemplated, and abandonment the elderly - who also have high suicide rates in Korea.
I find this show so interesting and multilayered. I got to thinking tonight about its portrayal of clan/collective ideals and capitalist/individualist ideals that come up against each other in Korean society and the consequences of that conflict in the lives of the characters. The role of the ajusshi - an old school type hero with old school values - in his corporate, community and family life is beautifully captured in this show. His relatinship with Jian threads through these areas of Dong Hoon’s life to give us a very human experience of the hero. Love this show to pieces. Well done.
I just love his presence. It’s been so long since I’ve come across an actor with such charisma. He really immersed into his roles. Hope to see great works from him in the future!
There is so much a dislike about this drama. The emotional realism (except KC and GS) vs the fantasy vs the romanticism of the camera work was so disjointing. The characters that conveniently fit the plot was irritating and the typical plot elements of birth secret, truck of doom, useless detectives, acancer, etc was so cliched.
I'm telling you. I am here for Pope alone. The story is cute and I like the OST. I also like that there is (obviously restrained) some commentary on the equality of men and women. I love Pope's open and honest adoration of his female leads.
HS. I can't believe the amount of comments this drama got. For one of the episodes the drama got 850 on discuss. It's possibly one of the most popular recent dramas.
Ramblings after finishing Ep. 10 with 5 more to go. We all love it when the guy is head over heals for the girl and isn't a creepy stalker and we get that here. Yay! The gender equality in Buppe Sannivas is way unbalance but I have to say that I love Pope in just about anything where he showers FL with adoration. Too bad our FL is such a Mary Sue. They try to play it off with humor and do not praise her for every modern thing that she knows/does and so I let it go. The one thing I am not cool with here is the treatment of the original Karakade. I get the social norms, but lakorns really need to do better in the way they portray women. And seriously, with all the merit that replacement Karakade is doing, I would think that original Karakade would be reborn as a man and a move up the karma food chain thereby canceling her own existence :). Who knows. Anyway, it's really worth the watch.
