Thanks for the article. I wanted to check out the main lead's other works after Find Yourself. However, this story is absolutely ridiculous. Had to drop it after three episodes.
Okay. I signed in to MDL after about a year's time to write on Baron Chen's page. The reason: every once in a while, I get these moments of "that guy is really hot", "he's got a big ego", and "he's such a bad boy" after I saw an interview he did (saw it a year ago and it obviously left a huge impression). I just wanted to give a shout-out to him here. Just before posting this, I checked him out online and realized that he is actually the son of a famous/infamous triad leader - now deceased.......... me in shock........ have I seriously been fangirling a real bad boy? (T^T) In any case, I still like his rogue-ish charisma.
They use the same estate as in Royal Family. It seems that the K drama industry has lost a lot of their pool of okay actors to the military, or something else. The pool these days for talented young actors is pretty dry imho. The male lead here is a significantly weaker actor than the other actors in the show. Sigh. That's so disappointing. I also couldn't stand the lead in WWW (I didn't mind his performance in My Ajusshi but that is as far as I have seen of depth from him) and now he is in another show coming out, and don't get me started on the lead for Class of Lies ( I can count his range of expressions on one hand).
Acting -10 Jasper Lee and Puff Kuo created a couple with believable feelings and intense chemistry. Even in the…
I think the situations would have made sense if they went down a darker road but instead it was very tame. I still love the execution - I thought it was really well done.
Take a chance to see this amazing drama if you are on the fence about. It's a great piece of storytelling. Really, the ending was okay but the journey was incredible. Every week, without fail, I would check it out before the subtitles came out. Props to Jasper and Puff Kuo for their delivery - which by extension means props to the directing. I'd been convinced of Jasper's capacity since six years ago and it's a pleasure to see him grow and Puff Kuo has matured so well as I can tell from her last two TV productions. Anywho, if you end up binge-watching this, let me know how it goes. I'm curious to see if the experience is as good as the weekly wait.
It’s a historical romance. It’s not necessary real history. There r many fictional historical novels, dramas…
I think we have different ideas on how logical the character setup is and that is absolutely fine. I did have more than this reason for not wanting to continue but I hope you enjoy the rest.

the men did fit a certain standard and it was families that came together in the past not a man and a woman. and really, the politics of it all is not what i'm trying to address. the male lead as well as the female lead did work within particular social circumstances in that drama that were believable. in this historical romance, as i was pointing out, the female lead in this drama acted the way she did without realistic consequences which made it less beleivable. certainly, a female character could be portrayed as she is but the actual consequences should have a level of believability even if it is not simply a dramatic rendering of actual history. in moon embracing the sun the consequences and restraints for the ml and fl actions were written into the story. though it was fiction, it had a level of believability around the characters. while watching this, i kept asking to myself throughout both episodes how can she act that way and not face any consequence...does this mke sense? it's not about expecting women to act a particular way, it's that it was impossible for her to act that way really.

Whether or not it's a historical romance, the character should fit the setting in a believable way. A female character like that in a Joseon setting without consequence makes little sense. If you look at Sungkyunkwan Scandal, Moon Embracing the Sun, etc, they are of a similar nature to this drama and though the females are strong in their own way, they are believable characters. They are strong despite the limitations of their circumstances. Yes, there is a layer of the cross-dressing and fantasy layer respectively -similar to the fictional elements of this drama, however, the character themselves make sense to a believable. I get the #metoo era sensibilities, which are good in many ways and is shaping the stories that are being told, still, the lack of social restraints that the character faces despite her apparent nature is 1) a false portrayal of what women faced during that time and place and 2)feels forced. An alternate universe would make more sense. Knowing the history and appreciating it for what it is, I can only suspend disbelief up to a certain point for entertainment purposes. In any case, I have seen both dramas that you recommended.
It's pretty, glossy, and lighthearted but I find it difficult to continue this one. The female character makes absolutely no sense for the time period even if we are trying to write with a modern sensibility. I also honestly have yet to see a SSK drama where she feels authentic in the role. CEW needs more growth actor. Sigh.
Thanks for sharing these sentiments. I totally encourage embracing diverse - and dissenting - opinions which can only contribute to an enriching community.
She is a sevant/slave. Probably she was raped in 15 or 16. It could be understandable and coherent.
the legal marriage age of noble women was 14 at that time. brides would be married younger if they were of the lower class. she was raped at an age younger than 14 . i'm gonna say 11 or 12 by what they hinted at later in the story.
King2Hearts is not a good example of leaning on a partner role reversal. It's a trope in itself that's used in eastern/western drama/movie. It is where the man comes home to find home/rest in the bosom or skirts of mother or lover. A role reversal would be if they portrayed a woman doing this.
One ep in...Male lead is a stalker/jerk/fboy. While main female is indecisive and weak willed. You know where…
Are we watching the same drama? I don't think it's the typical dramaland scenario.
Yes, the ML surely is a jerk and is manipulative but I don't think the drama is selling him as an ideal like they do in a typical romcoms. He has self-awareness, calculative, and impulsive around the FL. Despite the flaws, I think he's a pretty deep character. I also think the FL is the opposite of what you described. She's quite normal and mature in fact. However, the fact that none of her friends know about her boyfriend is a bad sign to me. That means this guys is very controlling. She's beginning to build awareness around the dynamic of her relationship but is attached to it and will not let go so easily so she's trying to assert herself (2nd ep). This is the nature of a lot of relationships in the real world. Also, I could tell from the get-go that the ML's girlfriend is not so sweet as you put it. There is something clearly off about her from the texts to the first scene with her. The second episode defines her this a bit more.
I'm glad you will continue to watch, because if feels authentic and I think it will be executed well.
