Funny, I loved all the dramas you mentioned above xD ... I guess tastes differ ... Painful dramas for me: Coffee Prince, Faith, Nailshop Paris, Hong Gil Dong, Protect the Boss, etc :D
I've almost finished it and I like it so much, although the lead girl is so stupid, but I guess that's also a reason why this drama is funny to me. But still, it has some great characters in it. The only thing I don't like is the introduction of some random girl every other episode, it get's annoying.
This article is amazing, you took the words out of my mouth (or heart to be precise). As a lover both Korean and Japanese dramas I totally agree with the points you made and I was quite shocked about some of these statements. I understand that everyone has their own opinion (and is of course entitled to, but some of these reasons seems pretty shallow to me.
I don't know how often I've fallen in love with a Japanese actor already. They have very handsome actors as well. I love that you included a picture of Matsumoto Jun, he was my favourite actor when I first started watching J-dramas and I always thought him to be very handsome. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but I think that some people get confused by makeup etc. - I sometimes feel that Korean actors are way to overdressed or wear too much makeup in dramas, you perceive the person as beautiful although maybe he/she is just average looking.
Also I think it is great that there are so many genres and topics in J-drama-land. I mean, every single Korean drama has a love story and most of them even have a love-triangle (or square). That's pretty predictable and to me it gets boring sometimes. So I really enjoy watching some J-drama inbetweeen to keep things interesting. And honestly, there are so many interesting topics, why focus on romance all the time? I really enjoy stories about family, friendship etc as well. They are not inferiour. I sometimes feel that some people have the mindset that da drama needs to have a romance in it or it is automatically bad. Well, you could miss out on great shows if you think that way :D
For the real/J-drama lack escapism-thing ... I can't see the point. There are realistic J-dramas and unrealistic J-dramas. I've always had the feeling that J-dramas are more realistic (of course depending on genre, fantasy is never realistic to begin with^^) and I love that. I think this depends on taste, some people prefer realistic shows, some people want something unrealistic that encourages dreaming :)
I could go on and on, but you already mentioned the most important points anyway. So, great article and I am looking forward to reading anothere one of your articles sometime in the future :)
Woah. I haven't expected this shitstorm. For the change we have an experienced actress who actually can act and…
I also don't get what all the fuss is about. They are actors, they are not in a real romantic relationship, it's no big deal. And honestly, before reading the comments here I didn't even know of the age difference and I didn't notice a thing when I watched the drama. I don't think that he looks that much older and I really think that they made a great choice regarding the leading lady :)
Don't know what to say to this drama so far but I'm kinda disturbed at the story plot...i mean i was like WTF?!?…
I really love the drama, but some plot elements seam too far fetched :D ... why would the dowager queen be so desperate to get the queen pregnant? Hasn't she heard about concubines or what? :D
This is a very interesting and exciting drama. I just finished watching episode 2. the baby princess burn to death?…
Now think about it ... the princess did not die, but we clearly see the baby burn to death. Either the monk knows some powerful magic or they just burned some other child oO. I hope they will explain her survival later on.
I love J-dramas and I also started my Asian drama obsession with J-dramas :)
Why do I love them? Well, because I explicitly love the fact that not every story is about romance and that there are so many different plots. It never gets boring. I really love the focus on different kinds of relationships (like mentioned in the article).
Oh, I've already listed my favourites in a forum post :D ... well, let's think ... I really love the OSTs of Warrior Baek Dong Soo, Six Flying Dragons, Bridal Mask, Dong Yi, Yi San, King's Daughter Soo Baek Hyang, Queen Seon Deok, Scarlet Heart (Chinese), Jade Palace Lock Heart (Chinese), Prince of Lan Ling (Chinese), Jang Yeong Sil, Korean Hana Kimi (don't know the name right now^^), Otoko Demo Onna Demo Nai Sai (Japenese), Adolescence Medley, Gokusen (Japanese), My Girl, Shut Up Flower Boy Band, Sungkyunkwan Scandal ... well, mostly from historical dramas :)
Am I the only one who is actually happy they shortened it? I just felt like if they made it 20 episodes it would…
No, I'm happy with it as well, I like the show, but I think that 20 would have been too much for my taste, since I thought that some bits have already started to drag a little
i'm still managing to resist the urge to start this.o.o i know waiting every week for such drama will be agony!…
It is agony :D ... but the agony is totally worth it. And I mean, there are already 18 eps out, so you can at least binge-watch about a third of the drama in one go xD
Lol, Mine was "Playful Kiss" and "Personal Taste". I'm also going to drop "East of Eden"…
I'm still struggling with finishing Personal taste and it also took me a while to finish Playful Kiss ... Protect the Boss was similar, but it was still ok :D ... somehow those dramas started out well and became really boring and draggy^^
