I can't disagree totally ,, she's not relying on her education only to surpass men , she needed a strong backup to lean on so she can progress and that doesn't scream feminism or strong independency but we have to consider the age of this story ,, their time can't be easy for women to go anywhere so if she used a man to get what she needs at that time she's smart woman , of course it's romantic story so she's not totally independent

She's wearing a wedding dress in the credits so we are sure they will get married and he won't die LOL

I agree the writer could have chosen gratifying end than this one, he could have had some sort of cure or at least lived as a sick physician with his decibel,, he could have had some poison's after effect, or lost his memories then his decibel reminds him of who he is and stayed by his side without dying trying to help people solving cases

He left a goodbye note to everyone and to his decible that doesn't say he's living his simple life , it says he surrendered to death
