Their job is to ensure the safety of the mother and the unborn child by providing the mother with all the relevant information about what to expect, let the woman make a decision and then switch "safely" to a different anti-epileptic.

Even the doctor who was suggesting GaoTu terminate his pregnancy was in the wrong but in hindsight that situation is different because there's a chance of GaoTu not surviving his pregnancy without his alpha.
When we're faced with clinical dilemmas or unpredictable situations (whether it's pregnancy or something else) our first go to is to REASSURE the patient! Arrange for tests and close monitoring to ensure their safety and let them make their own decisions after providing them with all the facts that we know so far.
