I know all that. The point is these scenes need proper framing and dialogue and foreshadowing. Not slapstick humour and quips and the FL mentioning the script after doing these actions. The drama is capable of creating touching dramatic moments so it's not an excuse that it failed to do this for the FL.

Tangerines are usually for good fortune but I'm guessing that's not the meaning here.
