I don't know if it's the role limitations but CDL's acting outshines XYL. Considering we're halfway through the drama, I don't find the CP to be believable.
I can't really recommend because the genres and novels published yearly in China beat the rest of the world by sheer volume. Try getting an account at Novel Updates and start at the forums there.

Actually, it was normal if a wife died to seek a sister or cousin from the same family. To ensure she'd care for the children because they are related.

Arranged marriages was the norm and most people got along fine. A person's heart isn't made of stone. He shared his life with her. Maybe it wasn't some grand love story but Yunxi loved her enough to mourn her.
The issue is how the narrative is written. It needs to be supported by evidence or foreshadowing. We are told the FL came back to find family and a home but in truth there's nothing for her in this manor and she keeps trying to carve out a place. If anything it only fits the profile of an abused child which she is.
12 but it doesn't matter because the show is pushing this angle since FL returned. It feels like the scriptwriter is trying to create a mother/daughter bond that doesn't exist.
I don't understand why FL thinks her mom is some weak, defenseless woman. Nothing indicates it in the plot so far and it's been proven that she managed to hold on to her position as lady of the manor for nearly 20 years. This woman is neither stupid nor weak.
