The plot wasn't progressing and not enough episodes are left so everything starts becoming weird from Ep.28
They might have changed events for the drama version since there hasn't been sufficient foreshadowing of the political side of the plot. Sorry, I can't remember what happened to the boy emperor.

It's been a while since I read the novel but that Eunuch scene was just a threat to make the boy emperor back off and not try to control him through marriage. Later on, when it became a choice between a puppet emperor controlled by his uncle and a crazy Qi Min who has a rightful claim to the throne, he decides to support QM's son instead. Sort of cleaning up the rot that infested the imperial court since 17 years ago when the battle happened where both his father and the crown prince died.
XZ isn't really a villain in the novel. He's more of a morally-grey character who was lied to for years and feels very hurt that his own uncle betrayed him.
Third CP of the princess and strategist? They have no chemistry at all.

I don't like to compare between a novel and its adaptation but in this case the novel is better. The Eunuch Scene doesn't make sense to be placed in Ep.32 because we know the Empress already betrothed her daughter to the Li Eldest Grandson.
A butcher is at the lowest of the social ladder and a female butcher is even lower than a male one. So yes, no hint of realism to the point of it being absurd.

I don't know how to say this nicely so excuse me, but in the drama XZ has no character and is basically a lovesick fool. In the novel, his character is stronger and he's much more focused on his duties as a general and his revenge and duty toward his family. He loves FCY very much but he's not blinded by it to the point where he's going to abandon everything. If you watch the drama, you see everyone is very afraid of XZ and respect him but we are not SHOWN why people are wary of him. Because he spends most of the drama mooning over FCY😅
Plus all the history and politics were not explained so it's a mad rush in the last 10 eps.
The old emperor was suspicious of his eldest son, the crown prince and plotted his death. When there was trouble…
Wei Yan was roped into it and was going to take the full blame. This is the problem with the drama, not enough eps dedicated to the plot. Maybe they'll mention it in the last few eps.

Agree to everything you pointed out. I commented on MDL that there wasn't going to be enough episodes left for the plot and that was when we reached ep.20 and still hadn't left the town. No one agreed with me😆
I commented here that FCY's characterization is inconsistent, you can check for my comment so I don't repeat it, which results in this Mary Sue image that appears in certain scenes. Both her and XZ are not like their original selves in the novel.

The director also worked on Blossom and that was with a different screenwriter. There was so much plot for only 34 eps.
