I don't think there's a mistake on part of the director or writer. A real human being has many aspects to their personality and their own flaws. Frankly the ML is MORE interesting because of his flaws.

He knew exactly what he was doing. When he woke up and found himself hurt and without memory, he quickly identified which Rong sister he could use as his backer and protector in the manor. He is not some poor, defenseless kitten here. Even if he tries to act that way😂
There are people out to kill him and he has no allies except her.
Being too arrogant is a kind of stupidity in itself. Putting aside the FL and later events, he was very brazen in confronting the human traffickers like he thought he had 9 lives or something. When he couldn't find a way to get the constable to confess, he hurt himself with the sword and then framed the dead man for trying to kill him. Thereby absolving himself of the murder. The constable may be corrupt but ML executed him on his own decision. That was not righteousness.
Later he went and lied to his superior, his superior knows very well he is lying, and put the other magistrate who was the constable's brother in law on the spot and embarrassed him. His superior tried to gently warn him that he shouldn't shame people to this degree and try to leave a way out both for himself and others.
So what did ML do later when things didn't go his way? He sat down on the same chair as his superior, an implied insult, and brandished an imperial decree that he gets to do what he wants. Sure it's very satisfying to see some "face-slapping" in the drama but no clever person goes about their career like this.
I like the ML's character in all its complexities but I'm not going to whitewash his flaws.

Academic brilliance does not translate into life experience or wisdom. He was arrogant because he was a child prodigy who later got appointed as the youngest imperial censor with a special permit from the emperor.
He threw himself off a cliff to live? Yes, but did he account for all variables? No. Frankly no sane person throws themselves off a cliff.

And yes, the amnesia trope is done very nicely. ML is still himself even with the loss of memory. It's not irritating to watch.
