This drama's central theme seems to be the past and its effects, karma if you will. Every character deals with the burden of their past, whether they had a hand in it or were just victims of it. It would be interesting and more satisfying if TLC really managed to defy fate as he repeatedly says throughout the drama; it would be a cheap trick to have him die at the end after all the positive messages about the importance of life and it's ability to change circumstances.

Agree. Also, it's been a long time since this kind of martial brothers/Shixiong has been depicted in recent Cdramas. It's all about romance and by extension sex and offspring. This kind of intense platonic relationship where this person is both friend, family, and benefactor is the way TLC sees Fang Zhou.
Kudos to the post-production team here. They did a great job in the lantern festival scenes and I say that as someone who's seen so so many similar scenes in other dramas. This one stands out.
