Many other female centric books are the same. Drama adaptations have to make necessary changes so that ML character has decent amount of character and presence. Zhao Ling was adapted quite well imo.
I've read this book to half way as well. I agree with your comment about it'll be super boring if adapted as it is. The novel's authors other books are also the same, they tend to go deep into domestic lives.
Author also wrote Blossom and Sword and Brocade novels. I read Blossom's novel before, very much similar flavour as this book with a lot of domestic scenes which didn't make it to the drama.

Towards the end of final episode, their daughter said she wants to become like her father: a general, a high official. Then he mentioned he's a regional commander.
Finially finished. This was such a well written, acted, and produced drama. All the cast were on their A game during…
I didn't like Fan Yake, she was such a vain person. But my perspective for her was a roller coaster throughout the story. Disgust, pity, and then empathic joy. I felt such a relief through her by the end of the story. I can feel happy for her that she found her peace.
It may seem like Yu family got off easy. But, it's one of the worst possible outcomes for them. Even death may seem a quicker way out.
And finally our lead couple. The ending is such a fitting one for them. They went through so much and got to the pinnacle of power, but at what cost. I'm glad they found peace and they are at where they can truly be themselves: safe and sound with the loved ones. Your home is where your heart is.
This was such a well written, acted, and produced drama. All the cast were on their A game during the final arc as well. I know DYX can act and he absolutely delivered. My surprise is in DEX. She improved sooo much compared to their previous dramas, especially towards the end of the story.
This is a very angsty drama though, but good quality angst. So, I was totally okay with that. Definitely one of the top dramas of 2026.
she just have no idea what the court entail.........its not as easy as she think just hosting party and drinking…
Both the lead characters don't come equip with the perfect tools for these deadly politics like in other stories. Their inexperience show in the story, and has visible consequences as well.
FTY not having the information network? Got schemed by Madam Yu. ZL wanted to rush things? Got owned by Minister Yu.
No miracles happening and characters actually having to own up to the consequences of their actions are the main draw of this drama to me.
A tough experience and a wake up call for Zhao Ling indeed.Though, I would replace 'greater good' with 'his interest'…
Zhao Ling thought Emperor would be constantly 'good'. It's not entirely wrong for him to feel that way either, since he and the Emperor has a decent relationship up to this point.
But, he's still inexperienced in navigating these muddy waters and it cost him a fair bit. Emperor is Emperor, he's gonna play politics with everyone, even to his own flesh and blood.
i like how the maid in these drama always so loyal to their master... even if their master is a piece of shit…
Their own fate and fortune lie with the rise and fall of their masters. It's not like they can choose who they want to serve. So, it's ride or die for them.
I also like to watch/read those sisterly bonds between master and maid in these stories.
She was not telling him 'she wants divorce'.
"Road to Splendor: Youyou Arc" lol

Mama Yu became mentally unstable.
YJX lives with his mom and son, providng through letter writting service. He seems utterly broken as well.
If you recall the previous episodes, she asked FTY for a new household registration.

Some of my thoughts about the final arc -

A tough watch for viewers tho π
