The synopsis doesn't even scratch the surface of how deep and engaging the novel is. And from behind the scenes…
I tried not to spoil too much, there are still so many things that happened in between and after, many side stories relevant to the overall picture. All in all, if they nail the adaptation we're going to have a very beautiful drama to enjoy.
Both Li Yunrui and Meng Ziyi are perfect for the roles of Yan Shang and Mu Wanyao. I can't wait to see it. Feel free to ask more questions if needed.

It is a journey about growth and love, but filled with many ups and downs.
The ML, Yan Shang is a poor aspiring scholar from the countryside. By coincidence he meets the FL, Mu Wanyao, a princess as she is travelling through his village. The ML is very smart and figures out that she is a princess, he tries to get on her good side so that she can help him pass the imperial exams and get to the capital. On getting to the capital, he encounters many obstacles in the process of passing his exams, the FLs aunt tries to force him into becoming a boytoy because she likes handsome young men, his position as a scholar is almost stolen, because of his straightforward and righteous view of the world and politics, he gets into so much trouble and clashes with the FL at times. He had to learn the hard way about life, being an official, a lover, a friend, about compromise without losing your bottom line, etc.
The FL, hmmmm. At first, I was wondering if the drama was going to adapt the entirety of what she went through in the novel, but from the reuters I've seen, they are probably going to do that[ maybe not 100%] She's the youngest daughter of the emperor and empress, her mother the empress came from a very powerful family and the emperor even though he loved the empress very much wanted to strip her family of their power. The crown prince, the FLs older brother died, then she was sent for a political marriage to the Barbarian king by her parents, she was 13 or 14. Not long after she left, her mother also died. A few years later, she escaped from the other kingdom and came back home after her husband died. She suffered a lot and had to do anything possible to escape, after her return she realised that in order for her life not to be manipulated by the men in her family and the court officials, she had to acquire a lot of power. She got involved in politics, joined the new crown prince's faction and got her hands dirty. This was the point of contention btw her and the ML, he wanted to be a good official that benefitted the common people, but she was involved and privy to the corruption that made the people suffer.
When they were still building their relationship, this was rocky as well because of the FLs trauma from her previous marriage, she played with his emotions a lot, he loved her and wanted to marry her, so he worked hard to elevate himself, he was on the path to become Prime minister. But she didn't want to remarry, she didn't want to be at the mercy of another man, she felt if she got enough power, she could decide her own fate. A huge injustice happened to the people in a particular county. There was a huge flood and shortage of food, the ML volunteered to go investigate because he wanted to make an impact and nobody else wanted to take up the job, the court officials realised too late that sending him was a mistake (the guy was big on telling the truth and making sure the common people didn't suffer). He uncovered a complex corruption scheme, if he gave a report all the arms of the government would be involved, heads would roll. Although he was righteous, he knew telling the whole truth would be chaotic, so he held some things back in the report. The FL knowing that he might tell the truth was asked by the Crown prince to lure him back by saying she was sick. He left the county in a hurry to see her without fully finishing his task. After he left, many witnesses to the case were massacred and he didn't know for a while. When he found out, he was disappointed in the FL and felt so guilty because these people trusted him. He then calmly blew the cap off of everything, he rewrote his report and submitted huge evidence of the depth of corruption in the court. He was almost killed, the Crown prince and FL were livid. This is what caused their first separation, it was devastating to read π«π«π«
I was reading the synopsis and kept waiting for the moment where something tragic or dramatic happens, the kind…
The synopsis doesn't even scratch the surface of how deep and engaging the novel is. And from behind the scenes pictures and clips we've seen, the drama might be quite faithful to the source novel. If it truly is, we're in for a roller coaster ride.
Hmmmmm, for people complaining that it is childish and not funny. First of all, I don't think the drama is trying to be comedic or to make us laugh out loud. Most of the seemingly comedic parts are the characters deliberately acting that way. For example, the part in ep 2 when they wanted to get rid of the extra women who would be spies. Secondly, both JBZ and MY are deceiving one another for now. He's using her, she's using him, we can see that she acting all cute is just what it is supposed to be: AN ACT. The whole story is yet to unfold.
Seriously, had to block that James whatever person because they were totally not getting the point and I think…
Blocked him/her already yesterday. I've encountered him/her in other comment sections and he/she never has anything good to say. Better to block people like that than endure reading their ridiculous takes.

I hope all the changes work out in the end.
Thank you for your response.
Thank you.
I'm so curious.
Your last four words are absolutely ridiculous.
