I was watching Happy Ending Romance before this show. So, three episodes in, I’m more than happy to see there’s an interesting story that seems to involve actual people in the real world (despite the fantasy meteor setup), editing that makes perfect sense, a director who is directing, and a discrete soundtrack that works. This is brilliant! I mean, have you watched Happy Ending Romance?

Title Bed Friend
There’s a serious problem of tone here. It goes from too cartoonish (the co-workers, the mother) to heavy-handed drama (the flashbacks and the mother) so the series hasn’t found its feet yet. As a result, the banter isn’t witty or funny enough and the drama just feels exploitative — worse, it’s veering into trauma porn. All the chemistry between Net and James gets drowned in the middle. The score just makes things worse.

Finally, there’s a marketing problem. Mandee has promoted Bed Friend as a red hot workplace romantic comedy. What we’ve got is a red hot mess.

Palm is such a sap. Kisses don't pay the bills or put food in your stomach. Take the damn salary. This show is…
I guess everybody agrees on this one: this episode was really weird to say the least.

Uea: “I’m just an ordinary salaryman.”

They show his apartment. Suspension of disbelief is over.

It was raining heavily while filming
I’m really confused. During that first night scene in front of the restaurant, the street in those wide shots was totally dry.

The first episode mixed the aesthetics of Wong Kar-Wai’s Happy Together with the beats of a GMMTV series. I’m here for it. Do not mess this up.

Save what, darling? This ship sailed long ago.

Creators: it’s not a gangster story.

God made Ha Jong Woo’s lips and threw away the mold. They’re so magnificently distracting I have no idea what’s happening most of the time. Or maybe it’s the poor editing, but it’s fine. I’m here for the lips.

Did we ever find out why Name refused to talk all those years? There's one episode left and now he's just blabbing…
He tells Em in episode 10: he saw his father commit suicide when he was a kid.

You want me to believe the kid saw his father being killed in a dark alley at night and he didn’t grow up to become Batman?

Yes, I also enjoy it. I feel a bit sad because I think this is unfairly judged by all the BL fans.
They really got the right balance. Even the main couple’s story has improved. All the couples are interesting, the humor is on target, and that BL triangle really works. The only flaw in episode 8 was that Paul and Nice are barely in it — but they are worth every second in the background. It’s one of those rare series in which they manage to improve things and keep everybody’s stories fresh. It’s not a masterpiece but it set itself to be great silly fun and they nailed it. I didn’t expect to have this much fun.
